Yup. In college I used to work out for two days and then take a break for one day (had a lot of free time then). My muscles were always really sore the second day but I just pushed through it (long distance runner mentality at work). I would've gained more muscle by laying on the couch. Either take more time out between workout or alternate muscle groups so your muscles have time to recover.

If your muscles are still sore then they haven't repaired the damage you did to them before (the process by which you gain more muscle). The second day is useless. Hurting them again before they heal doesn't cause increased muscle growth; it almost certainly slows it.

Work out each muscle group at most twice a week.

as for the protien shakes being worthless, they are if they arent a filled with all the amino acids it takes to build muscle.

thats why eating a chicken breast alone isnt as good as drinking a complete protien shake (26 g of protien btw) and eating a chicken breast

You have to define what the "protein shake" contains before making such a statement. Any protein shake that's made of whey or other animal source contains all the amino acids that the body cannot produce on it own, so there is no need to add a second source for that reason. The same goes for the chicken breast not needing a complement.

Are there some kind of pre bottled protein shakes in America that you buy and they contain 26 grams of protein?

Most people over here make their own with protein powder.

youre completely right on all accounts. the shakes i refer to are actually home made with protien powder, not premixed stuff you could buy at the market.

also said shakes are a compliment to other protien foods since singular foods like chicken, etc etc dont contain all amino acids needed. you can achieve this with a smart balanced diet but shakes are a relatively cheap and fast shortcut to complete protien intake.

AFAIK they do. They're animals and have the same protein in them that we do because we're animals too.

Hey Boshko and KH -- if I take one day off from working out before resuming, will this be enough of a break for my muscles?

Should be OK. But I'd rotate the workouts a bit so you're not doing the same muscle group every second day but other people mgiht disagree.

Also no matter what you do if you're doing the same things over and over again every time you go you get in a rut. Rotation is good.

well perhaps not in the quantities needed to make a difference. i remember finding a site that had various amino acid levels and which specific ones were most prevelant in different meats, beans, nuts, and eggs.

I dont believe that chicken muscle is exactly the same as human muscle though in terms of protien makeup.

perhaps you should also mix up what muscles youre working out. for instance you can get a 3 to 4 day rest if you just do chest on saturday and tuesday. if you work out a specific muscle group on preset days rather than trying to do all of them on one day, you can cut down the amount of time you work out (i only do 45-60 minutes on weights spread over 4 exercises) and work out harder each day.

What MRT says is basically right, except how the hell does it take you that long to do 4 exercises!?!??!

Sounds good -- I think I will start the new routine today. I will only work my back, legs, and stomach muscles today, and then tomorrow, I will work my upper and lower arm muscles, and chest muscles. This will also give me time then to do the cario workout on an ellipitcal machine -- 15 to 20 minutes on the days I work my back, legs, and stomach muscles.

Oh, and last night, I bought a five pound jug of whey protein mix. I plan to consume double the amount of the powder mix twice a day (once immediately after working out, and then at night, right before I go to bed). The consumption immediately after workinig out will help my muscle cells with the loss they suffered from the workout, and consuming the second double serving before I go to bed should be effective, as one's metabolism goes way down when sleeping -- should help the protein stick to my muscle cells even better then.

Taking protein immediately after working out is smart. Taking about 20 grams about 30 minutes before can help, too, for the glutamine and leucine kick. If you take creatine, then would be a good time for that as well.

For just-before-bed protein, casein is a better choice, as it's slow-digesting.

Yeah, it is nonAnimal sources that you have to mix and match.. meat provides it easier.
