  • Computer Processor Question

I'm shopping for a new computer, and I'm faced with the decision of choosing between a computer with an Athlon AMD 64 x 2 Dual Core 4200+ and a computer with an Intel core 2 Duo processor E6300 (1.86GHz, 1066 FSB). What is the difference between the two? Which has the better processor?

I have heard complaints about the Intel Core 2 Duo processors requiring powerful fans just to keep it cool, and in the end the difference between that and a good AMD processor is very little.

Just stick with AMD, they are trustful, they don't seem to play the "corporate game" like Intel do.

Every Intel I have ever had to work with has given me problems; whereas every AMD I have had to work with has exceeded my expectations.

So just stick with AMD, thats a rule of thumb I keep for myself.

I don't think you will notice any difference.

Right now, top of the line Intel beats top of the line AMD, but costs more. I don't know if it's worth the price difference. For older cpus, you're better off with the AMD because they are both superior and are priced competitively. I'd go with the AMD offhand, but I haven't looked into it for a few years.

The other thing you need to consider is chipsets (north bridge and south bridge), as there are different capabilities for either cpu. For example, IIRC, nVida chipsets (not video cards) are only available with AMD. I don't know if Intel chipsets still allow you to use rambus memory (or eveny if rambus is worth it) but AMD can't use it, IIRC.

              First - WTF?
              Second - WTF?

Core 2 Duos run cooler than Athlon X2s. And they're quite a bit faster.

AMD and Intel playing "corporate games"? They both do. They are what we call "corporations".

Yeah, the Core 2 Duos are a new type of Processor from Intel, a new line (from the old P4s). It is a decent from their Laptop line, and are much more capable.

Previously I would have said AMD (for the last 6 years or something), but I think the new Core 2 Duo's are worth looking at!

I'm going with the Athlon, because I found it at a good price. I don't need an especially powerful computer, and I'll save $250 by going with the Athlon. I just wanted to make sure that Athlons were decent products.
