Just thought I'd post something from the article:

British-born researcher John Philippe Rushton, who previously created a furore by suggesting intelligence is influenced by race, says the finding could explain why so few women make it to the top in the workplace.

He claims the 'glass ceiling' phenomenon is probably due to inferior intelligence, rather than discrimination or lack of opportunity.

Men have a broader distribution.

The IQ Test is far from a solid metric of intelligence. I imagine that where the "glass ceiling" exists it's probably far more due to sexism than IQ disparity, especially since that disparity (3.63 points) is very small.

If we go by IQ tests your second assertion is correct, but your first assertion is wrong. Men and women get virtually identical mean IQ scores as groups.

Although this raises a question about whether some research should not be made public.

If an accurate metric of intelligence were devised, and the results of testing indicated that one sex/ethnic group/whatever performed better or less well than another, should the results be released?

My answer is: yes, of course. Science is neutral, and it's not up to scientists to suppress information because it may be taken out of context or used for nefarious purposes.

Groups would naturally tout these results and use them to bad ends, human nature being what it is. I still don't think that's a valid reason for censorship.

Likely as not, that's an artifact of the selection process.

Say that men and women both have in actuality a mean IQ of 100, but men have a standard deviation of 17 and women have a standard deviation of 13. These students were university applicants, from what I understand of the article. Say nobody with an IQ less than 90 applies to university. Since men have a broader distribution of IQs, more stupid men are excluded from the survey than are stupid women. Thus, the remaining pool of men has a higher mean IQ score than the remaining pool of women.

3.6 is significant. But you have a good point. It's not including the entire population. Thus, the study is not complete by any means.

3.6 points means that the average man is more intelligent than 52% of the female population or so.
