    Gainey was very smart to deal Ribeiro though. Not sure if you were familiar with his stay here, but he needed to leave town.

      I can see the POV that he had to leave.

      However you could have got a healthy scratch defenceman for a late round draft pick.

      A second line centre should get you a bit more.

          He's a second line centre with alot of baggage, and bad history. Any GM worth his pay knew that. Also, one of the least consistent 2nd line centre's in the league.

          The cap bit does worry me, but there's a feeling about town that Bob's not done yet.

              It also reflects that DMen are significantly overvalued at this stage of the cycle in the NHL.

                Oh, and even Nonis as a newbie in Vancouver managed to get value for Big Burt, and there were big problems there.

                All I can figure is that Ribeiro must have dropped a turd in Gainey's cornflakes this morning.

                No other way than that explains a trade with negative consequences. The Habs give up a 2nd line centre for a maybe not play defenceman and take the cap hit.

                  Well, Niinimaa is only making 2.5 to Ribiero's 1.9, so they only took a hit of 500k. Yeah, it pushes them to 42.5 mil, but it's not hugely different.

                  Also: I think Niinimaa could be poised to regain his reputation as a reliable 3-4 d-man. I think his situation is similar to Anson Carter's: played very well with Edmonton, got traded for money issues, then bobbled around a couple of teams (the hellhole Isles, and a short & unfriendly stint in Dallas), unable to find his stride. I don't think that makes him a bad players.

                  And also: Word is Plekanec is being bumped up to the 2nd line center role between Kovalev and Samsonov. That's nothing to sneeze at.
