Uh. No. This is not about ethics. Ethics has to do with a theory of right and wrong. Our theory on which animals we should eat can be summed up with, "OH NO THAT'S CUTE AND FLUFFY DON'T!!!!!".Originally posted by Will9
For Europeans that think this is stupid, do you think eating dogs should be banned. The Chinese eat them, while we wouldn't think of eating them. It is the same thing. Most Americans would only eat a house if they were starving and had nothing else to eat eat. While Europeans eat them without a thought. Most Americans see eating horses just as bad as eating dogs. It is mearly a different in ethics.

Not at all. Many Europeans don't like the thought to eat horse meat either, especially in urban areas, where there's a different approach to that kind of matter - and who'd like to eat Black Beauty he knows from TV?Originally posted by Will9

And you think the slaughter and transport methods for other livestock are better? Pigs (a highly intelligent species, more intelligent than horses at any rate) often suffer heart attacks because they know it coming. And hearing a pig squeaking at the slaughter house can make you not like your ham for months to come.Originally posted by Imran Siddiqui
Because the way horse slaughter is done is very inhumane.

A 2 horse carriage shouldn't be jammed with 10 horses. There is no reason to shove them in pens that make them unable to move.

You're absolutely right about the standards, but there's no reason why horses should be treated differently - this is just decadence.
(Btw., I actually do think the same about dogs and cats - I wouldn't eat them but as long as the procedure meets quality standards, I have no problem with people slaughtering them).

One funny anecdote though. At the rival Civ site with the swift hand in censorship (I won't name the site ) I once made fun in a sarcastic tone about the fact that in Civ3, the wine resource does give one additional food while the horse resource doesn't. You bet, this was enough for them to actually delete (not lock!) my thread with the explanation that I could possibly hurt feelings. Needless to say, that was my last post there...

Some of us feel there should be humane standards of care and slaughter of all animals. I'm an avowed carnivore, and I'll eat anything as long as it's tasty (even dogs, despite how much I adore dogs), but even food animals should be treated humanely. It's not about the right of an animal not to feel fear and pain, but the obligation of humans to reduce suffering when and where they can.Originally posted by Wernazuma III

I am reminded me of the joke: the Cantonese (or fill in ethnic group, I suppose) will eat everything with four legs but the table.

And I had better get some quick, too! Before some lawmaker makes it public that Lobsters are actually quite close to humans, and starts passing laws restricting their boiling.I hate politicians. Boiling politicians. Boiling politicians.

I agree that animals should be treated more humanely - corporate farms - but I also say that if god didn't want us to eat animals, then why did he make them out of meat?
