  • Odd equation

    Is it just me or is this equation illogical?

    7(x+3)-8=5x+2(x+2)

    -----------------
    7x+13=7x+4
    7x is on both sides? eh?

    9=0
    WTF!

    It's not illogical, it's just wrong.

          It's just an equation with no solution. You'll see a lot more of those once you get into systems of equations with multiple variables.

            Is that the whole equation? or did you bring us in halfway through?

            If that's the whole equation, then your maths teacher has just pulled random numbers out of thin air and expected them to work (In other words, yes, you need a new teacher)

            If it's only halfway through, then you may have gone wrong earlier on.

            BTW, a maths teacher is not a proper maths teacher if they can count. However, the ability to perform simple and complex algebra is also a must.

              What is the whole question being asked? I've had plenty of example problems given that were intentionally wrong to prove a point in a given lesson.
