How many here uses FireFox (or any other non-IE browser) at work?

The first day on my job we were told that we was not allowed to install ANYTHING. If you do install something, then you risk getting fired

Just great... my job requires me to use the internet (for searching) most of the time, but with IEs crash-rate and lack of features, surfing the internet can be quite annoying

Sounds a bit hysteric, but then the rules are clear.

Why don't you ask your IT department to make it a company package ? That is, they download it to the place where you get your other official packages from.

Adagio...same policy at my workplace. The only non-sanctioned software I had on my PC was a small Chinese language word processor and a small mindmapping software that I've just had to uninstall seeing the IT guys will be auditting the PCs next week.

Apparantly, because we outsourced our IT/tech support, there's something in their contract about problems created by "illegal"/ unapproved software.

Here's what you do. Bring your issues with IE to your manager. Tell him/her that Firefox doesn't have these issues, and that you can get your job done more efficiently if you use Firefox. In other words, it will increase your productivity. Your manager may then put in a request for IT to install it on your PC.

Alternatively, ask for them to upgrade you to IE7, which is vastly superior to previous versions of IE. Which version of IE are you using btw.

My company only uses IE, but I use Firefox and one of my coworkers uses Opera.

Si. Better security, tabbed browsing, more stable, not tied to a single OS, only supports standard features.

IE7 are probably better than previous IE's but still have the OS tie/nonstandard features.

I will have to try this. We have Win2K at work, so I'm not an admin on my computer. Can't install anything or even update what's on there. (Of course I understand why, as most people aren't computer-savvy, and some installed harmful stuff in the previous OS.)

I was so happy when a website that I actually used for work needed Flash. Of course that was a couple versions ago, and they haven't required the most current version.

What's odd is that some users got more recent versions of some software than what I have, so they can watch vids that I have to go home to view. Too bad I don't have a work-related reason to get updated.

I've heard about this, but the rules also states that we are not allowed to have anything on the computers, and we are not allowed to bring a USB-pen (they are probably too scared of viruses, which is understandable, as it's a very important company, a virus would be a disaster)

Already told them, they wont do anything about it. Probably because most who work there believes that "IE = The Internet" and would get too confused when getting a new browser
And I can't just have it installed on one computer, as I never know which computer I'll end up using the next day

That might be an option. Not sure which version they're using, probably 6.0 or something

I haven't had any problem about installing or using software. Somebody in IS tried to tell me that IE was more secure than Firefox, but I looked at him very sternly. He didn't push his luck.

I think there is something in the firm rules about abuse of firm resources for personal use, and many net ports are blocked, so it probably wouldn't be possible to do most P2P. Nor Telnet and ssh, unless I ask IS to put the ports on the exception list. Google Talk works fine. They also log sites visited, but don't check it unless they have reason to (nobody's ever complained about time on apolyton.net, f.e. )
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. I can't remember the last time IE crashed on me and I personally can't stand tabs.

Well, last summer, I used to bring my laptop to work and work on it instead. So technically, I've had everything I've ever wanted installed on my work computer

Though Civ4 wasn't out at the time so
