  • Revisionist History -- China

    No joke. They really have revised their history books. Mao? Virtually nonexistent now...

    BEIJING, Aug. 31 — When high school students in Shanghai crack their history textbooks this fall they may be in for a surprise. The new standard world history text drops wars, dynasties and Communist revolutions in favor of colorful tutorials on economics, technology, social customs and globalization.

    Socialism has been reduced to a single, short chapter in the senior high school history course. Chinese Communism before the economic reform that began in 1979 is covered in a sentence. The text mentions Mao only once — in a chapter on etiquette.

    Nearly overnight the country’s most prosperous schools have shelved the Marxist template that had dominated standard history texts since the 1950’s. The changes passed high-level scrutiny, the authors say, and are part of a broader effort to promote a more stable, less violent view of Chinese history that serves today’s economic and political goals.

        The Chinese communist party is one of the worst historical revisionists in the world. This is nothing new.

          True, but I guess this means they are no longer communists

            The no longer practice communism except at the collective farms and state owned industries which make up something like 40% of the total Chinese economy. They are trying to slowly get rid of that sector tough since its a big money loser.

            The organization is still named the Chinese Communist Party and they still run 100% of Chinese politics even if they no longer act like communists.

              Wow, and it was bad before. But at least they are tacitly beginning to acknowledge Mao's crimes by placing him the growing pile of things that must not be talked about.

                I learn something new everyday -- China has never fought in any wars, and apparently, China has never had any dynasties.

                    I wonder, which is worse, in your collective opinion, inflating communism's achievements, or staying totally quiet about communism, in general?

                        Not true. First of all the business is called socialism with chinese characteristics, which means they're all for making money and profit, but they also want to put their stamp of approval.

                        Second of all, of course they run the politics, the party is quite big. And the party itself has several different schools of thought, some of which are as far from communism as it can get... well not literally but still.

                        I think it's a better sign. Sure, it's whitewashing, but hey, better to have colorful pictures of economy than black and white pictures of Mao and the need to praise his ass.

                          The sooner all history books get scraped in favor of economics textbooks the better, and I'm not joking at all.

                            Shanghai = China?

                            I am not keen on the Chinese reading ability of whoever is the foreign correspondent for NYT, either.
