  • I hate directx

Mostly because you can't remove it and reinstall.

So anyway, I was playing a game tonight when the graphics started freaking out. This happened one other time (with CivIV) and I ended up nuking and reinstalling everything...I'd like to avoid that this time. I'm having the exact same symptoms as before: everything that requires directx fails with weird geometry issues. Did the normal attempt restore, uninstall/reinstall drivers, update directx, even tried manually pulling the individual dlls out of the directx cabs in case the files were corrupted, did no good. Anybody have any thoughts before I nuke this again?

This is a GF 6600GT, latest drivers etc.

dxdiag's direct3d tests all look like this:

      Err, you can reinstall DirectX.

I'm more inclined to think it's a driver issue than a DirectX issue.

Try a program like DriverCleaner to completely uninstall your current Nvidia drivers: http://www.drivercleaner.net/

No, you can run the directx installer, which does a cursory scan of what's already installed and gets newer versions when available. It doesn't overwrite your current version, only updates. You cannot easily remove it or even roll back to an old version (without a flaky third-party utility) and completely reinstall the whole package. Which it occasionally seems to need.

I already tried drivercleaner as part of my remove/reinstall process. Thanks, though.

There was a DX-de-installer for W95, maybe similar thing exist for XP.

            Like this, maybe...

Have you checked if there are any coments in the Files tab in dxdiag ? or for that matter in the other tabs ?

I found that, unfortunately it doesn't support XP w/SP2. The other tool that is mentioned a lot, directx happy uninstaller, is crippleware that I'd prefer to avoid if there are any other options.

Everything in dxdiag reports as clean.

Then I think you are screwed

A far out suggestion - do you have a graphics card that never has been used on said machine ? If a such behaves, then it may be that you have a driver problem instead of a DX.

Actually, unbelievably, I'm not screwed. Figuring I couldn't really make it worse, I pulled a bunch of directx registry keys, manually deleted the files, and ran the installer again. I had to clean up behind it by manually moving some of the files, but all is well now.

Why are there multiple versions of DirectX9.0c ?
