This isn't about Chinese culture. It's about a religious practice, one that a lot of Chinese people do not practice, particularly on the mainland where the Communists banned a lot of this religious mumble-jumble.

Saying Chinese culture is stubborn is wrong and a stereotype.

Claiming that Western culture is more enlightened when it comes to religious practices is BS. Christmas trees are hardly environmentally friendly, and neither is the pile of discarded Christmas wrapping paper.

And for the record, I don't like people burning joss paper, particularly when they do it in stairwells of my building. The problem is that it is a religious practice and we try to ban it, people will be up in arms.

christmas trees are a pagan tradition co-opted by christianity to gain more converts. its adapting to the situation not being stubborn.

Trees are a renewable resource, petrol is not.

Certainly it is not adopting a more environmentally friendly practice.

                Isn't that a time-scale dependant statement?

Actually, it is becoming one ... we now a) grow trees specifically for this (reforesting, essentially) as christmas trees grow pretty quickly; and b) many people now have 'living' christmas trees that they either reuse each year, or buy for a year then plant either in their yard or in a soon-to-be foresty area somewhere.

People who were born in Singapore and whose ancestors came from China a long time ago are "Chinese" according to this thread. They then engage in religious practices generally gone from their "native" China, so they are "stupid Chinese" polluters. Boy, do we need to start this thread over in a more generous vein.

Burning joss paper constantly over several days will undoubtably cause a pain in the nose worth protesting. Namecalling will get you a caning in "enlightened" Singapore.

Having lived in Singapore all my life, unlike, Sn00py, I have to say that things are much better these days than when I was a kid.

I'm living right in the middle of one of the older neighbourhoods (Bedok), yet it seems that the burning is much more controlled these days (e.g. people use the bins and receptacles that have been provided by the town councls for the purpose).

Giant Joss paper sticks used to be common sight everywhere, but these days they are are rarer.
