Flashdisc: I guess I need some drivers or whatever

What versions of Windoze are you running on each machine?

Oh, and codecs are for audio-visual files, the term you're looking for is drivers.

I guess it's Windows ME on my parent's comp, and XP on my laptop.
Yeah, drivers.

Win2k and WinXP automatically come with generic drivers for all sorts of crap you might want to use. WinME and before don't have those drivers, so you'll have to download the right ones.

Is there a brand name written on your HDD?

EDIT: I just noticed you said there was nothing on it... Have you tried taking the cover off, or looking next to the sockets? Sometimes the power plug (if it has one) will have a brand name one it.
