  • Well, It was a Good Run (Stargate: SG-1 Cancelled)

    It's over

Happy that they're ending because, frankly, it was getting to the overdone point anyway, and sad because it's over.
Today, you are the waves of the Pacific, pushing ever eastward. You are the sequoias rising from the Sierra Nevada, defiant and enduring.

Oh damn. They're going to finish this season though, right?

I liked it for about three seasons (i think cause I'm not up on my SG1 timeline) but it got old really fast after that.

One thing I have noticed after someone pointed it out to me is that if you watch reruns of the show it's really hard to tell which season the episode is from unless your a super fan. They hardly changed that much in all those years. I mean jackson died and all but he came back and telk (sp?) grew hair at some point. Only after Anderson left could you tell a distinct difference. Only if you catch an eposide that says hey we killed apothos already or something to that nature are you ever really sure.

I can actually remember anticipating the show because I loved the movie with Russell and Spader.

After reading the article I now remember that it was on Showtime for the first five years. I thought it was on there for a shorter time than that.

        I also found this interesting

Viewers and production personnel alike have blamed a number of factors for the show's dramatically lower ratings, from SCI FI and Sony's lack of promotion to the removal of anchor show Battlestar Galactica from the Friday night line-up, to new competition from such shows as USA's hit Monk.
It also appears that they don't want to give up the ghost on this one. I can't imagine another station wanting something that has seen its best years come and go but who knows.

What is to come? Both the producers and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer have expressed a desire to continue the hit franchise with not just Stargate Atlantis, but something new in the future -- be it an SG-1 feature film or TV mini-series, or a third television show. The benefits of a simultaneous dual production in Vancouver, with two projects sharing producers, writers, and crew members, are tremendous for the studio. And Stargate is owner MGM's flagship television property, having recently been compared to its venerable "James Bond" film franchise in importance.

            BLASPHEMER!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyway, Seasons 1-8 were the complete story, IMO, with 9 being the death throes of the show, and 10 being the random twitchs that can occur after a violent death. They ended Season 8 by spinning off to Atlantis (surprisingly well, all things considered), before accepting the Goa'uld as Vassals . Things went downhill fast from there.

Admittedly this is mostly from second hand reports (plus a few downloads ), as we're only up to Season 8 in the UK (Season 9 should be starting soon) and I've only got up to Season 5 on DVD.

I think my sister and I have been watching it too much, though. We were watching Sliders on DVD and pointing out every extra who appears in Stargate (quite a few tbh - not only were the two series made by the same studios, the pilot episode had special fx done by 'Stargate Ltd', the company created for the Stargate film).

stargate fans are going nuts on the Sci-fi boards. It's kind of funny cause it had 10 years which is more than the vast majority of any show out there. They are all saying one more year to tie all the loose ends up but with a show that has gone on for 10 years there are bound to be countless loose ends. They all want to get back at sci fi by not watching SGA. That's a real great plan they got there

Funny thing is the producer of the original Stargate movie is interested in a sequel BUT would completely ignore the 10 years of SG1 and instead want Spader and Russell back to reprise their roles. If it will happen or not is up in the air but I'm sure that pours a little salt into the wounds of the hardcore fans.

I wonder if said sequel would be like the 3 stargate books.

That makes no sense. If a SG sequel is viable, it will be because of the TV following. Why rock the boat?

I don't think it would even matter since cause I don't know if Kurt Russell or James Spader would even be interested. Then again Kurt Russell did do Sky High so anything is possible

"We always envisioned ("Stargate") as a trilogy, and, unfortunately, the way in which the movie got made, we didn't really have control," Devlin explained.

"They think there is an audience out there who would like to see what part two and part three were intended to be because there was a larger story arc that we had in mind," he explained, adding, "and we never got to explore it. So I think it will be very exciting to actually get to go do parts two and three."

Devlin also said that the first film's stars, Kurt Russell and James Spader, have long expressed interest in making a sequel. "The irony is actually because it was twelve years ago that we made "Stargate," part two was actually supposed to take place about twelve years later. We were just going to kind of age them up as actors so it actually works out really nicely."

Honestly It's a lot like BSG. It's all about who gets control of the project. I can see the TV side having a lot of pull because the execs may want to cash in on the history of the TV series but I'd rather see a movie based on the first movie. Less baggage and less effort to bring people up to speed who are clueless on the TV series. Again, it's all about who gets control. I would pay to see Stargate 2 but not to see SG1 the movie.

Here is a more in-depth version

July 21, 2006 - Producer Dean Devlin was at Comic-Con International in San Diego on Thursday to promote his new World War I film Flyboys. During the presentation for the film, Devlin let it slip that two long-planned sequels to his 1994 film Stargate might finally become a reality. He followed up on that revelation during a post-presentation roundtable interview.

"We always envisioned (Stargate) as a trilogy, and, unfortunately, the way in which the movie got made, we didn't really have control," Devlin explained.

At that time, there was already a commitment to turn Stargate into a TV series. Now over a decade since the film's debut, Devlin says the two Stargate TV series and new powers-that-be at MGM have made the chances of the sequels finally being produced that much greater.

"The irony is actually because it was twelve years ago that we made Stargate, part two was actually supposed to take place about twelve years later. We were just going to kind of age them up as actors so it actually works out really nicely."

The producer stressed that the sequels would be completely independent of the lore established in the small screen versions. "We would just continue the mythology of the movie and finish that out," Devlin said. "I think the series could still live at the end of the third sequel. So we're going to try to not tread on their stories."

And what of Roland Emmerich? Might he return to direct the sequels? "Roland wants to be involved in the development of it, and he wants the first opportunity to decide if he gets to direct it," Devlin said. "I think a lot of it will depend on what it costs to make. Roland now, he's making some pretty big pictures, so a lot of it will depend upon how much money I can raise [for] part two and three. But he definitely is interested in it."

"(Emmerich's) always loved the story arc, and the second and third parts are really interesting, and so it would be fun, it would be fun to explore."

An interesting side note is that the time slot may be used for the BSG show"Caprica" which would make the infighting on the sci fi boards between stargate fans and BSG fans possibly entertaining

Ah, Gaters and Galacticans exterminate eachother, and Fivers rise up to conquer them both.

But I hear Trekkies are planning a new offensive... And one can never discount Warsies. They forged an alliance with Scapers earlier...
