  • Escaped convict still at large in Virginia

    http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/08/21/vir....ap/index.html

Summary: Inmate is escorted from jail at 2:30 this morning to an emergency room because of a sprained ankle, apparantly by only one prison guard. Inmate overpowers prison escort at hospital, knocks him out, takes his gun, shoots and kills hospital security guard, and flees. While headed into the woods is intercepted by County Deputy. Shoots and kills Deputy..

The inmate is a 24-y.o. who has been homeless and unable to hold a job since graduating high school. In jail for attempted robbery of a convenience store last year.. (He and his pal approached the door of the store in hoods holding shotguns only to find the store had been locked up for the night - the clerk, who had just locked the placed up, saw them from inside and called the cops.)

The murdered deputy had won a merit of valor award three years ago for his actions under fire. He had a wife and twin 8-y.o. daughters..

About 15 yrs ago before I got into the computer field, I was a prison guard for a couple of years.. I did a lot of these hospital escorts and there were always 2 officers on every escort.. I was always alert and aware of my surroundings while in public with the prisoner, constantly looking for any way that the security of the inmate could be compromised and taking extra care to make sure he was always restrained properly.

I cant imagine the guilt that this prison guard must feel right now, knowing that his failure to do his job properly resulted in the deaths of two people.

    Ouch

I would think cuffs and foot shackles with the guard NOT holding the keys would be a minimum precaution. I also wonder if such prison guards should be armed if they in close proximity with the prisoner.

BUt heck-- who would think that someone on an attempted robbery stint would KILL two people to escape. I mean how long a jail term was he facing for that-- Now he probably faces death ( I assume Virginia has the death penalty)

He was awaiting trial on attempted ARMED robbery charges - potentially serious prison time when a gun is involved with any felony..

Guards are not armed while within the prison, but if they are escorting an inmate anywhere in public they must be armed. D.O.C. should never have allowed this guy to be transported without two escorts..

Virginia executes more people per capita than Texas, iirc.

SlowwHand is still out there, somewhere in Virginia after having fled from Texas-style justice?

I saw that but how much? If he has a relatively clean record, what five years?eight ? ten??

Compare that to facing a death sentence or being on the run for the rest of your life

I understand why the guard is armed I guess but it seems to me the reasonwhy guards in the preion are unarmed still applies somewhat. You don't want the fool escapee getting a gun. If then guard had no gun, even if the guy escaped, there would probably be no one dead

                    Handcuffs
                    foot shackles
                    2 unarmed guards
Keys to the cuffs and shackles not on the guard's person

Do all that and I think escape becomes unlikely. Skackles would be very conspicuous and with no gun, a handcuffed guy has to try to overpower two guards and hospital security by hand

I also wouldn't object to their being a GPS tracker being implanted on everyone that is convicted of a serious offence. I'm sure some will think thats some form of violation but not me

News flash: He was captured again less than 200 yards from where he escaped. What an underachiever!

One prisoner escapes and it's thread worthy? People escape all the time.
