A friend of mine near Newcastle loves it.

You know, England is North of the Mason-Dixon line.

Nothing is wrong with it. It's just not that big in my part of the world, (i.e. south east England) and I know of no-one who drinks it, yet seems very popular in the US. It's the 'Big in Japan' phenomenon that I find amusing.
Believe it or not there are a lot of foreign beers which are big here which hardly sell in their home country.
Scottish & Newcastle is a big English drinks company though and I'm sure some of their stuff is at your corner store even if it is under a different brand name.
Scottish and Newcastle are massive here, Diageo is the only other largescale company I can think to compare them to off hand. Their other brands like Foster's, Kronenbourg, John Smiths and Strongbow are not a niche market and far outsell Newkie which is heard of by all, even if not drunk.
One day Canada will rule the world, and then we'll all be sorry.
I read many years ago that Bass Ale was the most widely drunk beer in the world.

and why is that? I drink it because it tastes good. Not for some pretentious reason. If I wanted to drink beer because it's trendy, I'd drink guiness. As that's the most popular "trendy" beer where I live. It seems like everyone is claiming they are Irish these days. But the fact is, Guiness tastes like crap.
Why? What's wrong with Newcastle Brown? The stuff is delicious. The only brown ale I've ever had that was better was Oregon Brown Ale.
I'm also a fan of Newcastle Brown, but for an example of something better, I give you Sam Smith's Nutbrown. Of course, it's expensive as hell, but once in a great while it's worth every penny.
Beer Myanmar (Only beer in Asia that beats BeerLao )
Besides those I'll dink any pilsner thats cold enough
I thought Singha beer from Thailand was pretty good when I was there. It was dirt cheap (around $0.30 for a 22 fl oz bottle) and it went well with spicy Thai food.

Bass is the king of beers.
For lagers, the legendary Kenyan brew "Tusker" takes some beating, but Budvar and Staropramen are about the best.
Budvar is good. I enjoyed that when I was in eastern Europe but their American distributor seems to have problems because the beer often arrives at stores rather old and off tasting. I suspect the ships aren't refridgerated and that their distribution system is a bit long and convoluted. If they could get it here faster so that it was fresher then they'd sell boat loads of the stuff here.
