My HD digital cable box has an HDMI and Component connector, but the component looks better for most people and the HDMI is very buggy that locks up the box, sends crappy pictures sometimes, doesn't send sound other times, etc.

So, you have a 42" plasma EDTV with no component or digital inputs. Good enough for DVD (just don't waste your money on an upscaling player, or an HTPC powerful enough for ffdshow).

What it displays is 848x480, so it's 1280x720 or 1920x1080 downsampled to be 848x480 -- it'll look better than "regular TV", but it's not really high definition.

The majority of TVs advertising to be 1080p compatible today are similar cons.
Ah, so it'll input HDTV signals fine, and look prettier than my 320x200 normal tv's crappy resolution, but it won't really be 1280x720 ... makes sense, I can live with that for free (was a work giveaway of old monitors we aren't using anymore) [yes, it's old, and who knows how long it'll last... like 2 years old. But that's still better than nothing )

I think i may have to buy a converter box to use YPbPr ... it definitely doesn't have the 3 rca connectors normal for that. In the manual it discusses a box that converts for that; i'm not sure I can get that, and furthermore not sure it'd be right anyway (it shows a picture of FIVE inputs, and they look like a different cable)

Speaking of HDTVs, I just ordered my new one today. It won't ship for a few weeks, unfortunately, but that gives me enough time to build my new Core2 Duo E6600-based HTPC

I think it has DVI-D ... the composite doesn't look like a RCA connector (or similar anyway) like your cable you show there; it looks more similar to the other Component picture it shows, which are vaguely similar to coax connectors (I forget what that's called, normal antenna/analog cable connector) but not quite - in that it has an extremely skinny center piece, <1mm ...

Should I consider getting a DVI-D adapter to component video and/or HDMI? Or is DVI-D probably supported by the HD cable box?

Yes, it's nothing to sniff at, if it's free. Really, very few monitors in use actually resolve 1920x1080, and at 42" watching HDTV or movies it should look nice.

If you were going out and spending thousands on a monitor, you would get higher resolution. Some content is helped by higher resolutions, such as some sports.

... assuming I can get it hooked up anyway

I think I'll just wait until the cable guy comes out to worry about hookups (unless someone here has a 95%+ sure feeling I'll need something, and knows what that something is) ... I've also got a few people at work I can ask, ie others who ended up with screens. I suspect the cable guy can figure out what I need, and according to Comcast I don't need any cables [thus I can yell at them if the guy doesn't bring the right one, right? ]

                  Thanks for the help guys

Yes, higher res would be nice, but ... eh, whatever. Sports at 320x200 look fine honestly, and I suspect the upshoot to x480 will be a big enough difference for me to enjoy it quite a bit anyway

Grr, as I discuss this my normal tv cable is flickering. Darned comcast

You'll probably be buying 3 of these to turn those BNC connectors into RCA connectors. Absurdly cheap at Rat Shack. BNC connectors are typical for pro gear. RCA for consumer.

The YUV is component. Just use that for your cable, if possible. But the cable guy might know what to do when he takes a look at your TV.

Good luck and tell us how it goes.

Except I don't actually have three BNC connectors, nor do I have three RCA connectors ... I have one connector (in four flavors of one connector) ...

I'm hoping the cable guy figures it out

I'm confused. Is the 5 BNC (video)/2 RCA (audio) panel that you pictured above actually included on your TV?

No. It's an add-on that I'd have to find somewhere else ... thus not a preferred alternative.

I have read several things which have said plasmas aren't good as computer monitors though I've honestly never tried it before.

                                buzzword 'plasma'

Define "lots of native 1080p plasmas out there" -- there are a few at most, and they are absurdly priced.

BestBuy carries one, and it's 6 grand: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1152228813286
                                And it doesn't even count. It's billed as 1080p with a max resolution of 1365 x 768.

So I've been able to locate zero native 1080p plasmas. Hardly "lots".
