      Update for you guys,

      Re-install completed.
      Didn't go well.
      Turned out graphics card was busted.
      Bought new one.
      Easy to install.
      But troubles far from over.
      ADSL connection acting up.
      Computer froze almost instantly when connecting.
      Re-installed Windows numerous times over the course of several days.
      Got desperate.
      Severe withdrawal syndrome.
      Love life down the gutter.
      Finally solved network issue by mixture of sheer luck and ISP support.
      Could not activate Windows XP online due to excessive number of activation attempts previously.
      Called Microsoft and got it sorted out.
      Tons of malware found its way to computer within first few hours of being online.
      Neutralized most of it by gigantic manual cleanup effort.
      Cannot use Windows Update; says I need to download updated installation software, then tries for 10 minutes to do so, fails.
      Am sitting duck pending assistance in the morning from Microsoft Update hotline.
      Ads pop up every 4 minutes (no kidding) during ordinary online activity.
      Would prefer six weeks in medieval torture chamber over all this.
      Managed to get Usenet access working moderately well.
      Love life steadily recovering from alltime low.
      Fearful of what is yet in store for me.

        Buy a new computer
        Use the spare time for dating girls
        Date ugly girls/guys and have them pay for the evening- it´s a nice way of going out and saving some money
        I will never understand why some people on Apolyton find you so clever. You're predictable, mundane, and a google-whore and the most observant of us all know this. Your battles of "wits" rely on obscurity and whenever you fail to find something sufficiently obscure, like this, you just act like a 5 year old. Congratulations, molly.

          Talked to Microsoft Support, who directed me to their support by E-mail service. So I've reported my problem, and they'll get back to me within 24 hours.



          Well, at least I have my health.

                All is well now. It has been living Hell for the past 5-6 days, but I am now a born-again XP-user. Microsoft Support responded to my E-mail within the hour, with a comprehensive list of steps to take in order to enable me to use Windows Update. Last night, I finally got it to work, and I've completed all the updates (except SP 2, which I will give a pass for the moment). There were around 80 high priority updates in total, and an additional 20 for misc. software.

                The world is back to normal. I'm alive!

                I will, however, have to think twice before doing this again..
