  • Google Talk/gmail gets voicemail

Don't see it posted anywhere, but I just got "pushed" a new Google Talk update...it adds a little phone icon in the bottom of the window with the # of voicemails you have, and clicking it loads gmail with a "label: voicemail" filter.

Also, offline people have a "send voicemail" thing.

    It also has file transfer.

But only if the other user has the latest version (which appears to be pushed out to only some people...no one else has it or can get it yet that I've tried).

Gtalk becomes ultimately cool once it supports conference calling.

My gmail doesn't have the interface for the voicemail yet (it just sends the .mp3 attachment). But once my gmail gets updated, it'll look like this:

The voicemail message is funny. It's a British lady saying "The person you're trying to reach is unavailable. Please leave a message at the meep. MEEEEEEP!"

this can only be used to annoy friends!

              It also adds music status.

Their official "new features" page is up: http://www.google.com/talk/whatsnew_more.html

gmail is really starting to suck with regard to downtime and other performance issues. otoh, did you know that they put 1.6 billion into r&d last year - most of that into their search engine/ad recognition. impressive...

The latest version hasn't been pushed to me yet. Still 1.0.0.92.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

The file exchanging is cool since you can trade mp3s among your friends.

Mmm, or you could just share a Gmail account together and host all the stuff there

Hmm. I'm using GAIM so I don't actually have gtalk here... wonder if GAIM will be set up to use this feature eventually?

                              http://googletalk.blogspot.com/2006/07/testing-new-version-of-google-talk.html
We've been working hard to add your top-requested features to Google Talk, such as fast and reliable file transfer, and the ability to send and receive voicemail messages for free. We've even created a fun little feature for you music lovers.

So today, we're excited to be releasing these features to a small percentage of Google Talk users. We'll be rolling these features out to all Google Talk users on the U.S.-English interface in the coming weeks.

We're very excited about the new features, and look forward to even more feedback from our users. We're also working hard to make these features available in the other 13 languages we support, so that the millions of Google Talk users around the world can enjoy them as well! In the meantime, let us know what you think!
