If the UN thinks they were in the Right by letting Hezbollah set up camp next door to them (and truck around missiles, UAVs, etc.) and not do anything about, then they shouldn't act so shocked when Israel is intentionally obtuse to their calls.

But, as has been said, Israel made the decision to hit Hezbollah, despite the proximity to UN observer posts.

Israel better have better talking points than the stuff in this thread when the go to the UN with the results of their investigation, cause I hardly see the Chinese giving a damn about this "excuse", or any of the other countries that lost men.

I doubt China would mind that much. Most of their illict Western military tech flows from Israel. If they raise a ****storm about it, than China is going to very suddenly loose AWACs planes refitted in Israel, and Avionics that has been installed on their J-10.

China let the "accidently" bombing of the embassy in Serbia drop, they aren't going to be that pissed at Israel because the UN was stupid enough to put their guy directly in harms way.

Last time I looked, the mission have been there since 1978. The UN did not put them "in harm's way", they were put in harms way by Hizbuyllah and Israel. Get it correct.

Even if Hizbullah is "nearby", a direct hit by a missile is different form an errand artillery shell.

We should bomb an IDF outpost 'by mistake'.

Even if they were being used as 'human shields'...so what? The UN are a neutral unarmed force. NEUTRAL. Giving them arms kills that neutrality. They SHOULD be playing the role of heavily armed kindergarten cop between the two blood-soaked regimes.

The IDF should not kill unarmed observers repeatedly asking them to stop over many many hours. It's just nonsense on the face of it. Anyone who can defend such a brazen act is hopelessly partisan in my opinion.

The only comment I'll give on the ME situation is that my opinion that both sides are evil is unchanged. Hezb. for their intentions, Israel for the end results of their actions (far more dead innocents than Hezbollah could ever hope to have killed)

Or Lebanon could have said "well, we no longer have control of the region, it's independant".

Instead, Lebanon continued to maintain it has soveriegnty and had it's military stand by and do nothing. My sympathy for the country is pretty low.
Couldn't Lebanon have retained it's claim to the southern area while recognizing that it had become a "renegade province"? the PRC seems to have gotten away with this approach with respect to Taiwan.

How does arming peace keeping forces kill their neutrality?

Have you seen the picture of the "observer post"? Looks to me like a good Artillary spotter location. Of course they are going to take it out if Hezbollah is on that hill.

The original question was about punishment. Israel did what they did for their own reasons. I firmly predict no Israeli will be punished for this incident. Not many that can enforce a punishment. Those that could will be reigned in by the US, if possible, for the US's own reasons.

                                Now the UN outpost.

The similarities are repeated attacks over a prolonged period of many hours by combined arms on surveillance/monitoring assets - followed by a claim from one of the world's most sophisticated fighting forces that 'it was a mistake'

No one in the IDF was ever punished for the USS Liberty atrocity - will any be for the UN atrocity?
I knew you were going to post this - I thought it a couple of days ago. I was almost disappointed you hadn't gotten around to it by the time I signed off yesterday.

Details, details, it was 34 killed. And three bombs on an typically anonymous looking bunker on land isn't the same as combined sea and air attacks on a ship with a unique, unmistakeable profile, cruising all by its lonesome on the open sea.

But then those sort of evil military details might not be noticed by someone so insistent on vilifying the US for allegedly killing fleeing unarmed Iraqis, non-combatants and civilians that he couldn't or wouldn't identify tanks and other military vehicles in photos he posted of the so-called "highway of death," so nice try.
