It's been some years since I ran a pool but here's how it went. I ran this at the print shop I worked at back in Jersey and everyone thought it was great.
The person who officiates doesn't pay, but can still win.
Though the system can be adjusted the one I describe should fit 10 to 15 people. The reason for this will become evident. I know the adjustment for more or less players.
Everyone throws in $25. Every week $1 per person is wagered. Those with deeper pockets can multiply by 10, 100, whatever.
Every week each player picks simple winners and losers for every game. Every win gives a point towards determining that weeks player winner.
If a person is the only one to pick a team it's known as a 'Silver Bullet' and gives a point, win or lose. (For less than 10 people, drop this) If the Silver Bullet wins it's worth an additional 3 player points for a total of four.
If there are only two people to pick a team and that team wins it's worth double, two player points.
If only three players pick a team and that team loses, you still get a point. If it wins, you get a point. Basicly, you can't lose.
So, each week the official totals everyone's player point totals and a couple of things can happen.
1) A players point tie. The money carries and is added to the next week, except $5 which is added to the season winner's pot. I'll get to that. Those that tied are SOL except they have an equal chance to win it (less $5) the next week. Money can carry for as many weeks as it takes to determine a winner. (I once won a 5 week pot)
2) A players point winner, they get the dough for that week.
If the final week's money carries it is added to the season players point winner.
A running total of players points is kept from week to week, adding through the season. At the end of the season there will be $ left in the pot. The highest players point total person wins it.
Playoffs give double points, except...
Division championships give triple points.
Superbowl gives 10X points, or 10 points, unless there's a silver Bullet.
season's point winner gets everything not paid out during the year. (Of everyone's pre-paid $25.)
That's it.
Positioning yourself for the big end of season payoff and winning week to week becomes a huge conflict of self interest if you're up in the standings. Otherwise you focus on winning weeks and in so doing making $ and those out to take the big final payoff lives hell.
