Mallrats sucked... Dogma was better, Clerks 1 was better .

Man al teh ppl that dont realize jersy gilre is kvin smith going int a new direciotn nad maturing are stuid it shows he is mullifateced and hsa lts of talent too
Mallrats just wasn't all that good. At least not compared to Kevin Smith's other early work (Clerks, Chasing Amy, Dogma).

And to prove it, look at user ratings at IMDB . Mallrats is his lowest of the four (though I guess not all that much from Dogma).

I wouldn't lump Dogma in with Clerks, Chasing Amy, and Mall Rats. Dogma was the first Kevin Smith movie where he was "Kevin Smith." He had a pretty devoted following by then, and I think that the fame had slightly gone to his. Dogma, though funny and entertaining, was somewhat pretentous and bombastic, whereas Clerks and Mall Rats were more understated. Dogma felt more like a mainstream comedy, and lacked the charm that, IMO, made Mallrats and Clerks special.
I'd rate the movies as follows:
Mallrats
Clerks
Dogma
Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back (funny and entertaining, but even more pompous than Dogma. It also lacks the charm of Mallrats and Clerks)
Chasing Amy (a better movie than Dogma and JSBSB, but not as entertaining)
I've never watched Jersey Girl.

I don't get the love for Mallrats. I'm not saying it was BAD, really, but the best Kevin Smith film? How?

It struck a chord with me. My friends and I did a lot of hanging out at the mall as teenagers, I'm a comic book fan. It had Jay and Silent Bob, but, unlike the subsequent movies in which they dominate the entire movie, it didn't overuse them. It was made prior to Kevin Smith becoming huge, and it still has the charm of a small scale movie. It's biggest star at the time of release was Shannon Dougherty. Afleck was in it, but he wasn't really a star at the time. Dogma and JSBSB feel more generic. Clerks was good, but a little too verbose.

At the time Shannon Dougherty WAS big stuff. It'd be like casting Jennifer Aniston right after Friends was off the air.
