= Problem = The Telugu fonts provided by the ttf-telugu-fonts package (version 0.4.7) are effectively ignored for rendering Telugu text in Dapper because the /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-telugu-fonts/fonts.cache-1 file lacks a lang=te field. In fact, the lang field is *empty* in that file! As a result, fc-list fails to detect that the Telugu fonts provided by that package should be used to render Telugu text. The same problem applies to Kannada fonts provided by the package ttf-kannada-fon...
That may have a solution, in addition to confirming that it's an actual bug and not something you're doing<Reverend> IRC is just multiplayer notepad.

Do you have a link to a website so somebody could look at the rendering of said typefaces?(\__/) 07/07/1937 - Never forget

Hmm. I'm not sure I have any clue about the various indic languages, so I probably can't help answer this much. But, https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu...fox/+bug/48326 is linked relating to Firefox specifically having trouble with "Hindi" as well as kannanda/telugu.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Ho...cFontRendering is I think the same fix, on Ubuntu's website.
http://indlinux.org/ would probably be a good place to go for help...<Reverend> IRC is just multiplayer notepad.

Why don't all languages use the latin alphabet? It would make things so much easier."Compromises are not always good things. If one guy wants to drill a five-inch hole in the bottom of your life boat, and the other person doesn't, a compromise of a two-inch hole is still stupid." - chegitz guevara

I had a full featured Linux desktop in 2000/01. It took about 2 weeks to configure it and make everything work, and after this it functioned a charm, albeit it was butt ugly (fonts, icons etc.)
When XP came up, I switched my daily work back to Windows (I still used a Linux box as my server/router/gateway, though) and lost a bit contact to the Linux desktop front.
Just recently I set up a BSD box (granted, it's not Linux, but it uses the same X11, KDE, GNOME etc.) and thought, let's check how the free Unices developed on the desktop. It took 5 hours to compile X and 8 hours to compile GNOME (including the basic applications like Firefox etc.). When I started it, I was in for a surprise:
- Default screen resolution was 1400 x 1024. WTF is that? Why not take something with a broader consensus?
- I used GDM and was unable to log in. Why? Because the idiots didn't import the keyboard layout from the OS.
- I turned off GDM and ran it with startx. I set the keyboard layout manually.
- I turned GDM back on and tried to log in again. No avail. Of course, the keyboard layout wasn't yet loaded.
- I turned GDM back off and started with startx again.
- I checked the keyboard layout and it DID NOT STORE the configuration. What the ****?
- I started a simple word processor (comparable Wordpad under Windows). It took about 10 seconds to load.
- The icons, fonts and the whole desktop still looked butt ugly.
- I laughed and removed the whole X crap.
I am by god not a newbie in Linux, but there is a limit how much time and effort I am willing to spend into a desktop to get it productive. X is far away above time this limit.
