  • Geronimoooooooooo!

For nearly a half century, the U.S.A. has held the record for the highest parachute jump -- 102,800 feet (~20 miles; 31 km) by Captain Joseph Kittinger on 8/16/60.

Now, Frenchman Michel Fournier is planning a 130,000 foot jump (~25 miles ; ~40 km). He plans his jump over Saskatchewan. His two previous attempts in Sept. 2002 and Aug. 2003 were thwarted by weather and balloon problems.

If successful,Fournier will (1) break the record for highest free fall; (2) break the record for highest balloon flight; (3) break the record for longest time for free fall; and (4) break the record for fastest free fall -- breaking the sound barrier as he does so.

    Look what you've done

Now the poster named Geronimo will come in, pleasantly surprised, and expecting some sort of accolade and you provide him with nothing!

How dare you, Zkrib? How dare you?

Is he padding himself with a substance denser than any known to man?

Oh, he's all cocky and self-confident now, but he'll get down to earth one way or another.

I may be thick when it comes to these things, but free falling at the speed of sound doesn't sound terribly safe, and I'm not referring to the inevitable impact if your parachute fails.

I'd imagine (and could be wrong) that once he gets into the denser lower atmosphere he'll slow down a bit before opening the parachute.

                            Terminal Velocity:
"The speed at which atmospheric drag matches the pull of gravity, resulting in a constant fall rate; a body falling at maximum acceleration. The typical freefall equilibrium velocity attained against air resistance is approximately 160 - 200 fps, or about 110 - 130 mph for the stable face-to-earth body position; but speeds as high as 300 miles per hour have been reached."
