BEIRUT, Lebanon -- Foreign Affairs Minister Peter MacKay says eight Canadians have been killed in an Israeli air raid that hit a Lebanese town on the border with Israel.

MacKay says six other Canadians are in critical condition.

A report quotes Lebanese officials as saying the Canadians were killed at their home in the town of Aitaroun, which abouts the border.

The victims have not been not identified.

TV stations are reporting that the family had gone to Lebanon from Canada to spend the summer holidays in the town.

MacKay also says the government is getting commercial ships in place to evacuate people by sea.

Our prime minister will face some hard time if more canadians get killed in Lebanon. Since S. Harper said in press that he was supporting the Israeli attack on Lebanon.

Reports are the government has leased ships to go to evacuate up to 40,000 Canadians from Lebanon.

I wonder how that'll work, given the blockade, not to mention gathering up all the Canucks with roads and bridges being bombed.

There are a lot of people with Canadian citizenship who came here from Lebanon and then went back either short term or long term. It's also a popular tourist spot.

It's unfortunate, but is it really significant that these were 8 Canadians and not 8 Lebanese?

So I suppose you ju8st want year after year after year people to keep dying? As long as the number is proportionate? The absolutely idiotic policy the world has followed wrt the ME for the last 30+ years has to stop. I do not accept in the least that the status quo is a thing to be desired. I am overjoyed that Israel appears to finally be taking some decisive action. My only hope is that they will not stop until they have dealt with the all the armed terrorist that seek their destruction. Is it sad that civilians get caught in the crossfire? Of course! However, the real tragedy would be to let the madness of the last 30 years continue. F**k That !

It's not significant.

Or actually, it is, in that it prompted Cronos to create a thread dedicated to victims of the current aggression. It prompted you to write about how hard their evacuation is going to be (and we can only suppose that it will be much harder for the Lebanese than for the foreign westerners). And I expect there will be some other consequences in the debates to them being Canadian instead of Lebanese, as it brought their deaths into the Apolyton spotlight.

But I fundamentally agree that a Canadian's life isn't worth more than a Lebanese's.
