National service doesn't have to be military.

i don't think the draft should be the ultimate solution. things like pay increases and benefits, misdemeanor opt out, foriegn nationals to gain citizenship (yes, just for pekka) etc etc would be better.

conscription doesnt necesarily create the soldiers with the highest morale. and thats a factor in battles and occupations whether we like to admit it or not.

lord knows I'd join if I could make good money doing it, and have benefits afterwards

i just think a draft runs counter to everything america has been about and obviously certain individuals would find a way to weasel out of doing it.

Exactly. Red Cross, Lighthouse For The Blind, whatever is "drafted" as suitable. It should be longer service than military though.

The draft exists in every single war. This isn't new.

i think another thing to think about is what opportunities are we forgoing in taking young, smart people out of the potential workforce/educational system to do this?

i certainly wouldnt want some of my friends going to MIT or Stanford or Hawaii for grad school to serve in any way shape or form because they would be better used doing research in their respective fields of interest.

i think its a fine line you walk when you talk about individual and ecnomic freedom and then mandatory service at the same.

That's just a small percentage of the total.

Join the club. I don't mind. It is my considered opinion that the US is an aggressive, militaristic power bent on world domination. And it must be stopped.

obviously someone who is adept in nuclear physics shouldnt. dont you see that straight jacketing everyone into one solution is inefficent and wasteful of their respective talent?
