I know I wouldn't want a squardon of menopausal mad women after me.

No, but give the option of military or jail for misdemeanors.

That might actually result in a significant decrease in crime rates in the US

That is news to me - haven't followed it that much, but my impression was that women had problems with high G.

Women's averages are better than men's averages. This doesn't mean that there are not a lot of men who would make great pilots, even better than some women.

Since you're 48 (see other thread) Lancer, you're not at risk of the draft yourself. So I can see how it might be attractive at first glance. But aside from that, I have an alternate solution to your problem.

Get out of Iraq. Bring your troops home from Korea. Withdraw from Afghanistan. Give up your base in Guantanamo. Leave Europe to it's own devices. In a word, cease being an imperial power.

You'll have more money to spend on education and research. You'll be able to afford public health care insurance, like the rest of the industrialized world. You could even make a big dent in poverty rates.

I know, you'll argue that without all that projection of military force, the world will be a more dangerous place. Nonsense. The world is as unstable as it is mostly because of the interference of the US (and it's allies, including Canada) in places they don't belong. The US has done more to stir up terrorism than all the radical Mullahs in the world.

So bring your soldiers home and have a big party. The whole world will join the celebration.

I've met people that did that back in the 60's.

I had another vet from the same time say it would be a great idea. Today's young people are spoiled.

My own opinion is that if we have to do that then we are doing something wrong.

Very tempting. However over the last 100 years the US has paid a heavy price for taking the isolationist route. We would be suckers to try it again. The US is out there in many ways that we don't get to hear about. Tracking down biologic and nuclear weapons, countering the treat of additional terrorist attacks.

Isolationism would be like burying our heads in the sand and denying the threats. I an age when missiles can cross oceans in minutes and hundreds of ships dock in our ports, we are truly a global village full of bad characters, a village that really needs a cop.

Btw, I served in the army in Germany on the border. Though no harm came, I was there if it did. So when I suggest the draft I'm not asking anyone to do anything I wasn't willing to do myself.

An oversimplification. During the period of US islolationism, other powers were the threat. Now it's the US itself which is the threat.
