Will pseudo-science do G? I need to rant about something. Still statistics related though.
This is an example of several articles I've seen that (partly) explain the drop in retail sales by rising gasoline prices. It's crap and the authors didn't know how to interpret the data.July 14 (Bloomberg) -- Sales at U.S. retailers unexpectedly fell and consumer confidence declined as the economy struggled under the burden of near-record gasoline prices and higher interest rates.
It's correct to argue that if the price of an inelastic consumption good such as gasoline rises, there will be a shift of expenditures towards gasoline purchases, causing a fall in purchases of other goods and therefore a fall in total purchases, all else being equal. However, the retail sales growth figure is a nominal figure, not adjusted for inflation. Hence, when there are such price increases, the nominal level of retail sales, (or the growth thereof) is not affected, unless people save more or unless there has been a fall in disposable income (or the growth thereof). The real level of retail sales will be affected though.
That was my rant, thank you for letting me (ab)use this thread as soapbox.DISCLAIMER: the author of the above written texts does not warrant or assume any legal liability or responsibility for any offence and insult; disrespect, arrogance and related forms of demeaning behaviour; discrimination based on race, gender, age, income class, body mass, living area, political voting-record, football fan-ship and musical preference; insensitivity towards material, emotional or spiritual distress; and attempted emotional or financial black-mailing, skirt-chasing or death-threats perceived by the reader of the said written texts.

Statistics is math, not science. Stats is useful in science, but so is, say, the English language."Beware of the man who works hard to learn something, learns it, and finds himself no wiser than before. He is full of murderous resentment of people who are ignorant without having come by their ignorance the hard way. "

To be fair to Colon, he did call it pseudo-science."Beware of the man who works hard to learn something, learns it, and finds himself no wiser than before. He is full of murderous resentment of people who are ignorant without having come by their ignorance the hard way. "
