  • Nvidia sucks (91.31 drivers corrupt your harddrive)

The other day I read a report that some users with the new 91.31 Nvidia drivers were experiencing corrupted harddrives...people always have problems, so I turned the other cheek.

Today when I got home my computer was completely frozen, and Windows wouldn't boot. The drive with Windows on it was corrupted. A simple chkdsk from the Windows XP recovery console fixed it, but the culprit is Nvidia's latest official drivers.

There's a new beta out, 91.33, that reportedly resolves this. If you've got Nvidia drivers, I strongly recommend you use the new ones: http://www.nzone.com/object/nzone_do...bit_91.33.html

Why would graphics drivers mess up your harddrive???

Maybe I'll just wait 'till the Omega versions come out.

Windows puts its unverified graphics shizznit in insufficient protection in order to speed up stuff and shizznit.

If you put stuff in the computer without hardware protection, then it runs faster, but is more susceptible to error. Go figure???????????????????

Here's a comparable situation: You can either turn off hardware memory protection, or you can verify that all memory references access valid locations, i.e., that you don't have any null memory (de)references. The former is cheaper, the latter is valid.55555 cccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccc cccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccc cccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccc cccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccc cccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccc cccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccc cccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccc cccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccc cccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccc cccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccc cccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccc cxzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzzzdasssssssssssssssssf

Windows Vista doesn't run graphics drivers in kernel mode.

I really don't get the people who use Omega drivers.

I had Dawn of War stop working recently and it's support advised me that I needed to update my nvidia drivers to make it work again. I let windows automatically find and update the video driver but Dawn of war got even worse crashing the system as soon as I launched it.

I rolled back the drivers and the original problem with dawn of war somehow resolved itself.

How can I tell if the video driver I let windows automatically search for and install may have been this hardrive corrupting version?

Could my harddrive still be corrupted even after rolling back the driver and only using it briefly?

Is there anything I can do to clean up the corruption before it causes any problems?

Running "chkdsk" is how you'd fix it. (It stands for check disk).

                    Go Start->Run
                    Type "chkdsk C: /f"

You then need to reboot and before Windows fully loads, it'll find and fix any and all problems.

                    -----

To check which version of the driver you have installed, right click on your desktop and go to Properties. On the "Settings" tab, click "Advanced".

                    Click the "Adapter" tab.

                    Click the "Properties" button.

                    Click the "Driver" tab.

Look at the field called "Driver Version". If it's 9.1.3.1, it's the version that can corrupt the disk.

I have an nvidia graphics card. I'm not having any problems (with this, or with Civ, btw). Is this perhaps b/c I don't bother to update unless I absolutely must to play a game I want to play? Or am I simply lucky?

I'm running a 91.31 since quite a while. No problems so far.

Arrian: nVidia cards are good, just this driver seems to cause problems under circumstances.

Haven't yet had any trouble with 9131.

Also, if you're going to wait for the Omega drivers, won't you be waiting a while? I thought he discontinued the nVidia ones...?
