A Washington Times article by Bill Gertz has asserted that "Mrs. Plame's identity as an undercover CIA officer was first disclosed to Russia in the mid-1990s by a Moscow spy, said officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity."

And Ames was a traitor, the Bu****s disclosed her identity for everyone.

They wanted to file before the statute of limitations were reached, though they have no expectation of being able to proceed until Fitzgerald is done. I'm not sure they even have expecations of damages. What they're really after is discovery.

In any event, just because the USSR and Cuba knew that Plame was an udercover agent , it does not mean that other countries knew.

Before the disclosure, she had a career.
After the disclosure, her career is in shambles.

She retired at her own will and had been in a function as an analyst. And with pension. It will be an uphill battle for her to prove constructive discharge. Also, it is a very big uphill battle to find officials personally responsible for acts while serving. I give it very little likelihood of winning money. It will be great theater though for both sides.

Her book deal, her VF shoot, husband's publicity seeking etc. are not going to help the battle much either...

But no-one really thinks this is about civil service salary on either side.

Plame: My employer blew my cover as a secret agent, putting in jeapordy the lives of myself, of my husband, and of my children.

Contructive discharge cases have been based on less.

Like I said, it's not about actual damages, but bringing dirty laundry to light. You can't force discovery without an actual lawsuit.
