Israel can win short, sharp wars. It does not have the military power to ever remake the region to its liking. Israel's failure in Lebanon is proof of this.

It's like the old joke after the '73 war:

An arab armored division is advancing on Israel, with apparently nothing stopping them. The division commander has his forward command post with his lead regiment, an elite mechanized infantry regiment. The point elements of the recon company of that regiment reach the crest of a ridge overlooking a valley, and on the ridge opposite they see a couple of Israeli soldiers jumping up and down, giving them the finger, mooning them, and shouting insults.

The point element stops and sends a runner to the divisional commander. The divisional commander brings his forward command post up to see what has stalled his advance.

The commander is furious, yells out "why have you stopped the whole division for a couple of Israeli soldiers? Send a patrol over there and take them out!"

So off goes an arab patrol, they disappear out of sight into the valley below the two ridges. First there's nothing, then a whole lot of yelling, explosions, dust and general commotion, then nothing. They wait for a few minutes, and still nothing.

So the arab commander, even more furious, tells a lietenant to take his platoon down, find out what happened to the patrol, and "while you're at it, shoot those damned Israelis!"

So off goes the platoon, and they too disappear out of sight into the valley below the two ridges. First there's nothing, then a whole lot of yelling, explosions, dust and general commotion, then nothing. The rest of the regiment waits for a few minutes, and still nothing.

The arab commander is about to blow his top, so he yells at the captain commanding the recon company: "Take your company down there, find the platoon and the patrol, and while you're at it, shoot those damned Israelis!"

Off goes the company, and they too disappear out of sight into the valley below the two ridges. First there's nothing, then a whole lot of yelling, explosions, dust and general commotion, then nothing. The rest of the regiment waits for a few minutes, and still nothing.

By this time, the regiment is really starting to wonder what's going on, but the arab commander is really pissed, so nobody dares say anything. The commander yells at a lieutenant colonel: "Take your whole battalion down there, find the recon company and the platoon and that patrol, and while you're at it, shoot those damned Israelis!"

Off goes the battalion, and they too disappear out of sight into the valley below the two ridges. First there's nothing, then a whole lot of yelling, explosions, dust and general commotion, then nothing. The rest of the regiment waits for a few minutes, and still nothing.

The division commander is furious and blows his top. He is in the process of ordering the entire regiment to move forward, when someone spots a lone survivor crawling back up the road towards the forward command post. A couple of soldiers start to run out to retrieve the survivor, and he weakly calls out "wait... stop... it's a trap... there was a third Israeli down in the valley..."

After '73? I guess the joke helps to cover up the embarrassment of getting surprised by the attack and getting knocked back on their heels. Of course they did recover and win, so were around to make jokes.

Anybody gets a bit knocked back when attacked without warning by several nations cooperating across multiple fronts. Still didn't get the arabs much, though, did it? The Egyptians certainly had no taste for fighting Israel after '73. Nor the Saudis, Jordanians or Iraqis. If the UN whiners hadn't saved their asses, Israeli armor would have been in Damascus.

Actually IIRC there were plenty of signs, but Israel didn't think Egypt would dare invade, after losing three previous wars, including getting their a$$es handed to them in 6 days in '67.

And things have most likely gone too far for it to ever remake the region by diplomatic means. The Arabs simply have to peck away at Israel, losing every battle until they win the war. They have the numbers and the time.

Israel was a stupid idea in the first place, and in the modern world, such an ethnic state is an anachronism. Especially an ethnic state that only survives due to its support from the Anglophone sphere (which is in decline). Pretty much everyone else hates Israel the same way that they hated South Africa (which was also supported by the usual suspects).

The present situation will continue until the Arab states have the whip hand. When they do, Israel is toast, and the majority of its Jewish citizens can remove to Europe and the United States where they can live happy and prosperous lives.
