I just watched a doco about him the other night, and was inspired to download his solo stuff. Cort Haus is right: it was pretty bad. He might have made a living writing children's songs for some BBC show.

Had his faculties not generated though, we can only wonder what maturity would have done for his creativity.

He always reminded me of Peter Green. He's still alive (I think).

"Extremism in the defense of liberty is not a vice." -- Barry Goldwater, 1964 GOP Nomination acceptance speech (not George W. Bush 40 years later...)

One should be reminded that his solo efforts occurred after/during his breakdown... after the rest of Pink Floyd retired him. His work with Pink Floyd however, is up there with the great psychedelic works of the 60's. Daft, yes. Playful, yes. Childish, quite often. But that was the aesthetic of the time, and he mastered it better than most. Piper at the Gates of Dawn is one of my favourite Pink Floyd albums... I probably prefer their work in the 70's much better... but post-Syd Floyd isn't comparable to Floyd under Syd. They are both great for very different reasons.

        Goodbye Syd.

Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun.
        Shine on you crazy diamond.
Now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky.
        Shine on you crazy diamond.
You were caught on the cross fire of childhood and stardom,
        blown on the steel breeze.
Come on you target for faraway laughter, come on you stranger,
you legend, you martyr, and shine!

You reached for the secret too soon, you cried for the moon.
        Shine on you crazy diamond.
Threatened by shadows at night, and exposed in the light.
        Shine on you crazy diamond.
Well you wore out your welcome with random precision,
        rode on the steel breeze.
Come on you raver, you seer of visions, come on you painter,
you piper, you prisoner, and shine!

Nobody knows where you are, how near or how far.
        Shine on you crazy diamond.
Pile on many more layers and I'll be joining you there.
        Shine on you crazy diamond.
And we'll bask in the shadow of yesterday's triumph,
and sail on the steel breeze.
Come on you boy child, you winner and loser,
come on you miner for truth and delusion, and shine!

It will be hard to feel old while at the same time being so happy. Don't you think?

Rush and Pink Floyd are the best, but I'm not into the really early stuff.

the sweet smell of the great sorrow lies over the land
plumes of smoke rise and merge into the leaden sky
a man lies and dreams of green fields and rivers
he awakes to a morning with no reason for waking

hes haunted by the memory of a lost paradis
in his youth or his dream he cant be precise
hes chained forever to a world thats departed
its not enough its not enough

his blood is frozen and curdled with fright
his knees have trembled given way in the night
his hand is weakend at the moment of truth
                his step has faltered

                one world, one soul
                time pass, the river rolls

its not enough its not enough
                his hand faltered

he talks to the river of lost love and dedication
and silent replies that swirl invitation
flow dark and troubled to an oily sea
a grim imtimation of what is to be

theres an uncessing wind that blows through this night
theres dust in my eyes that blinds my sight
and silence that speaks so much louder than words
                of promises broken.

Are you sure it's not a ruse, and the Robyn Hitchock isn't simply killing off his old identity?

Funny and sad how the thread on Ken Lay dying received way more attention.
