  • Canada: You've gone and managed to surprise me

I've stumbled upon a few things that have raised my eyebrows in surprise. Which is interesting considering I lived in Canada for a good four, five years without realising this stuff.

Is it true there isn't actually free trade between Canada's provinces? I've started reading about the Agreement on Internal Trade and the establishment of the British Columbia-Alberta free trade zone.

But come on...How can there be free trade between Canada and the rest of NAFTA or between the EU memberstates and not between the provinces of a country itself?

Is it like this in, say, the States?
Exult in your existence, because that very process has blundered unwittingly on its own negation. Only a small, local negation, to be sure: only one species, and only a minority of that species; but there lies hope. [...] Stand tall, Bipedal Ape. The shark may outswim you, the cheetah outrun you, the swift outfly you, the capuchin outclimb you, the elephant outpower you, the redwood outlast you. But you have the biggest gifts of all: the gift of understanding the ruthlessly cruel process that gave us all existence [and the] gift of revulsion against its implications.
    -Richard Dawkins

    No.

"No tax or duty shall be laid on articles exported from any state.

No preference shall be given by any regulation of commerce or revenue to the ports of one state over those of another: nor shall vessels bound to, or from, one state, be obliged to enter, clear or pay duties in another."

Article I, Section 9 (in part) of the US Constitution.

Yet... states can set their own tax rate on items.. such as gasoline, cigs, booze... These vary by state, or even by city and county

That article is a decent summary of what has gone on for years. Interprovincial barriers are usually less about duties and more about the creation of certification or licensing barriers, local preference rules and the like.

Well, we may have provincial magarine trade issues, but we federally decided you can butter your bread however you like (gay marriage). I'll take the latter any day.

It is sad, but at the same time we're alot closer to actual free trade within Canada than among NAFTA signatories.

On the other hand, they have to impose uniform taxes. For example, if California wants to tax orange juice, we can't tax Florida orange juice more than we do California orange juice.

NAFTA rules. I did a big report on it last term analyzing the economic effects of it, and there's no denying it assisted all member nations' economies.

People terrified of Mexicans and Canadians may not like it, though.l

                          all states are different
For example oregon where i am at now has no sales tax at all. but they have a high state income tax. Texas has a pretty good size sales tax but no state income tax. I find myself thinking why am i having to pay oregon state tax if im not a resident and am paying taxes in texas. I hope for my sake at the end of the year i get all my money back from oregon since i have realy no rights here whats so ever.
