World Football Thread XIV - Italy: Hail to the Champions
I will never understand why some people on Apolyton find you so clever. You're predictable, mundane, and a google-whore and the most observant of us all know this. Your battles of "wits" rely on obscurity and whenever you fail to find something sufficiently obscure, like this, you just act like a 5 year old. Congratulations, molly.

On another note, how awesomely appropriate is it that Trez was the one who missed the penalty?

all the people condemning matterazi here have clearly never played football in their lives. if there was a head butt every time someone's mother, sister or whatever got insulted by an opponent, every game ever played would get abandoned.
There's a difference between that and calling Zidane in particular the son of a terrorist whore. Particularly when Zidane's mother had been hospitalized that very day, and he has suffered from years of racist abuse equating him with Al Qaeda.
It's common sense. Generally, it's no big deal to sledge other players, but circumstances matter. If I'm playing against someone whose mother just died and I start saying that his mom gave excellent head, I should rightly expect a kicking.
FIFA needs to stamp down hard on racism. At the very least if it turns out that Materazzi made a racist insult, he should lose his medal and face a long ban.
IIRC there are provisions in the rules for team disqualification in the case of racist incidents.
When Neil Ruddock racially abused Patrick Vieira in the EPL and got spat in the face, Vieira was sent off, took an eight match ban, and was held up as a despicable villain for his reaction, while Ruddock was cast as the victim of a terrible crime.
Ruddock's comments were anti-French, rather than anti-black, which may partially explain why no-one was too bothered by what he'd said.
Eric Cantona reacted to anti-French insults from someone in the crowd by karate-kicking the offender - which got him banned for a year.
Now this happens and suddenly the violent reaction to verbal abuse is winning as much sympathy as condemnation. I guess it's because Materazzi is so unpopular anyway - like Robbie Savage turned up to eleven.
Apparantly the turf where the incedent happened is being sold off for millions, politicians are weighing in with opinions, the internet is going mad with it. And tonight - the Great Headbutter himself speaks!

That greasy pizza cook round the corner keeps saying things like "bon giorno signor" to me. That's probably a dirty macaroni insult, and I should punch him in his face for that next time.
Oh he's definitely mocking you. They all say that and then act surprised when you punch them.
He's got the Midas touch.
But he touched it too much!

I think Americans have gotten interested in this incident, which explains alot of the differences, particularly the internet fame. Very few Americans know anything about the Ruddock or Cantona incidents; I personally don't have the first clue who those guys are and, frankly, I don't really care too. The fact that it was Zidane, the best player of his generation, committing this act on the greatest stage in soccer made Americans take notice, however. And we liked it. All the *****ing about this being a "disgrace" and a permanent stain on his career seems to be coming from Euros. As we Yanks already think Euros are overreacting pussies, we just assume that this is another example of that, which inevitably leads to us taking Zidane's side on this. He's the hard man who laid out a Eurotrash ***** and we love him for it. And given that we have a preponderence of influence on internet trends, you're going to see that reflected.
