  • Airline Ticket Questions

I have some quesitons about Airline tickets. I want to go for about a week to see my brother get married. (Early August)

Currently tickets are $500+. Will they get cheaper?

    I remember generally spending 300-400.

That's not exactly much info to go on. Where is it you need to go?

In general, you get the best deals either booking a while in advance (few weeks at least) or right before you go. However, there is no guarantee of cheap seats at the last minute, nor any guarantee that you'll even be able to get seats at all on a flight you want.

I don't care much about specific flight. I am going WAS to PDX or ORF.

Try Priceline. Bid really low... can't hurt.

The only reason tickets would get cheaper closer to the departure date is if there are excess seats available and the airline is trying to sell them off.

yeah, I heard this was common

I heard best times to buy are 2+ months in advance, or less than 3 weeks

If you're not concerned about your specific flight, take Theseus' advice.

Also, if you haven't already, go directly to the discount carriers' websites and take a look.

Question one, from what city to what city? Try cheatfare.com, expedient.com, and the airlines that service both cities.

If you fly from BWI, you can get down to the 300-400 range, check it out at www.kayak.com

$430 right now from Southwest, BWI-PDF. Could be cheaper depending on day, i picked random ones in early august.

Kayak's great for finding the cheap tickets.

And I'd advise buying sooner than later. Yes, tickets will sometimes get cheap in the last days before a flight if there are plenty of seats available, but the converse is true -- if there are only a few seats left on a particular flight, the airline tends to charge a lot more for it. With summer being one of the heavier travelling seasons, and the bankrupt airlines cutting flights (and thus capacity), I personally wouldn't risk it -- though I've never been much of a risk taker.

Generally I find that airlines don't generally care much about your fare, regardless of destination.
