-Jrabbit, there's no question that prices are going to keep getting driven down, quite dramatically.

Combine advances in technology, price pressure from competing technologies, greater manufacturing capacity, a larger installed base for capital amortization... and more, you get the picture.

Gotta bite the bullet some time though... I had my eye set on when high quality 50" plasma became available for less than $3000. Even then, I was pretty nervous about making the purchase... one of the things that *really* helped convince me about this Panny model was the two slots for installable 'blades: great upgradeability.

Why $3000? That used to be the number I always had in my head for new computers... which I replaced every 2-3 years.

Everyone has a tipping point where price meets desire, and a purchase is made.

The industry knows that their sales volume will skyrocket when they hit the magic 3-digit price point. Which will mean more HD programming. Which will demand more HD production. Etc.

Bottom line: by 2010, when the conversion of US broadcast stations to DTV is complete, HD will be dominant.

Sadly, I'm about to put my daughter through college, so new electronic toys will be very low priority for awhile. I'll be on the sidelines, drooling at setups like yours.

We're starting our family very late (I'm 43, wife is 35), so, yeah, we can spend more on stuff like this.

That said, declining prices mean one can buy a little bit behind the curve and get fantastic deals/value. I bought the Marantz receiver about 18 months (more?) after its intro, and factory reconditioned, so less than 50% of what it would have cost otherwise.

If that is right, then the term "half-life" is wrong.

I don't know why it is so hard to follow. 30k hours is the half-life, half of the full life of the TV. However, at the half life, the brightness will be half as it was when first bought, only to go down from there. Therefore, it will still function after 30k hours, but by that point in time, most (if not all... if you can afford a plasma, you can afford to replace it after 30k hours) will replace the TV because the screen quality has degraded so much.

My setup, which is no way as good as Theseus (besides I don't play Civ on my TV either ). Great timing as well, as I got it right when SportsCenter was starting up, and well... you'll see

You expect me to put a nightlight in my entertainment system furnature for you?

How about you look a little closer on the left hand side of the console... at the grey bump thing there?
