As a people Germans are much better off. As a country, they lost 1/4 of its living space.

German people, especially the old, can be very arrogant. I've met a few in the Phils and they are so high on themselves, while belittleing those around them.

My father was a Swiss German from around Zurich and was part of this whole culture of male prickism. He was always pompous at the head of the table and the drunker he got the more he got mean with those around him in the name of his Germanic authority. If he and his German buddies got together though it's as if they had an unspoken alliance against the rest of us. I think the young in Germany can only have gained from WW2 if they don't turn out like this.

The Germans dealt with the Russiansin the First World War. Remember Brest-Litovsk? If it weren't for our unjustified entry into the war, the subsequent history of the Soviet Union and of Germany would have been drastically different. No Hitler, no Holocaust, a very weakened USSR (if Germany allowed the Bolsheviks to retain power after the cessation of hostilities. I think that the Germans probably would have toppled them.)

But no matter, we were making the world safe for Democracy and toppling those evil imperialist powers! (just ignore the fact that we were allied with the world's foremost imperial powers, Britain and France, along with the autocratic Tsarist regime.)
