On July 2, 1776, the delegates to the Second Continental Congress voted their independence.
Thomas Jefferson was appointed to draft the declaration. Two days later, with the help of Franklin and Adams...and with some revisions from Congress
Jefferson produced the Declaration of Indepedence, which the delegates adopted and began signing. The colonies' richest man John Hancock went first, scrawling his name large enough so that John Bull could "read it without his glasses."
Franklin commented, "Gentlemen, we must now all hang together or certain we shall all hang separately."
Happy Birthday, U.S.A.
