  • Average White Band.

Anyone heard of them? I have vagely heard of this Scottish Band and last weekend I spent two nights hanging out with them in my hotel bar. They seemed like nice enough fellows for aging band members and I and tthankful that they turned me on to the good graces of McCallan Scotch Whickey.

Started in the 70's then kept playing until today. I have no idea how many member changes have occured in the last 30 years.

BTW I'm drinking McCallan 18 year old Scotch right now. Expensive but nice whiskey.

"White Scots on Soul" -- Motown-style soul with a vengeance. Sort of a real-life version of The Commitments.

The group was on Atlantic Records, and really only their first two albums (around 1974-5) got much attention in terms of sales. Their material was mostly instrumental, with a great horn section and tight rhythm section. You would probably recognize their first and only big single (again, instrumental), called "Pick Up The Pieces."

Nice to hear they're back together. They were always well respected by musicans and critics. Oh, and the album cover of their first record (which, yes, I do have on vinyl) was killer...

I have heard "of" them. Don't know if I have heard them before or not.

                  ACK!

Can't disagree on the cover. I also have the vinyl album, bought it after I saw them live. There was a similar "white" soulband called Kokomo at the time.

I liked them back then but IMO they didn't stand the test of time. They are on my "I digged them in the 70's but I really lcan't remember why" list, along with bands like Yes, Genesis and a lot of jazz-rock ****.

AWB had the funk. Horns, rhythm guitar were killer.

Their biggest sin was in being a large (nine guys, I think) ensemble. It's damned hard to support that many people on tour. It's been the downfall of many a fine assemblage.

Yeah I was going to say I remember them playing Pick up the Pieces, but that's about all I remember of them.
