    You sure as hell can.

Wealthy men who give most of their fortune to good charitable casuses, *CAN* buy my respect.

Some douche who gives 500k a year for tax write offs which is a grand .0001% of his net wealth, can not.

It is a matter of degree.

Then maybe it's a matter of you being superficial. Or slow on the uptake, since I'd say you should've respected them all along.

Giving large sums of money to charity, is a charitable act.

I had no specific reason to respect Warren Buffett in the past.

Now he has done a very charitable act, which is worth respecting.

Was I supposed to respect him for doing charitable acts, if he had not yet done them?

If that is what respect is about for you, then I guess it can be bought. In this particular case, 85% respect, which really isn't bad, all things considered..

Giving money well takes a lot of time and attention, which Bill Gates and his wife have, but Warren Buffett doesn't.

I'm happy that Buffett will be supporting the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which is less political than Buffett's late wife's foundation.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Hey! Where is the gift to the PLATO foundation?!?

Now that would earn him my undying love!

I'd take a million or two and give a free lunch to the kids in school near our house in the Phils. Alot of them go to school hungry every day. A couple of million would feed them for decades.

Lets see you give 85% of your wealth away then we'll talk.

Charity is a thing worthy of respect.

No it isn't. It's commendable, but personal respect has very little to do with it. Especially when you make a big PR spectacle out of it.

PR spectacle? The man is unlikely to ever increase his wealth for the rest of his life.

Considering he is donating billions of dollars, I think its fine if he revels in the glory of his charitable act.

                              What precisely is respect?

Actually I’m going to stop being defensive. It is not warranted.

I'll cut right to the point and save me 20 posts responding to more of your pettiness.

Your a mean, petty ###hole who can do nothing but nit pick on a forum and criticize a great man for an act which could potentially save the lives and improve the lives of millions.

When was the last time you did anything charitable, be it donations or working for some charitable cause?

When was the last thing you ever did anything selfless for another person?

                              ### off.

Good. Mayve Gates can make some headway for education and disease control like Carnegie did for the arts.
