I will never understand why some people on Apolyton find you so clever. You're predictable, mundane, and a google-whore and the most observant of us all know this. Your battles of "wits" rely on obscurity and whenever you fail to find something sufficiently obscure, like this, you just act like a 5 year old. Congratulations, molly.

        Excellent thread

And yes, GePap, relative to Manhattan, Chicago's overpriced housing remains a bargain.

          810 METERS! 2657 FEET!

          crazy Arabs!

(it's interesting that this thead says "Who cares about terrorism" when apparently the most prolific skyscraper builders these days are in Islamic countries )

that one that Gepap showed will be across the street from the Kabaa, in fact, and will have a tower with a hotel to accomodate wealthier pilgrims. the whole building in fact is expected to accomodate 65,000 people!

and also have a shopping mall at the base... it seems that the pilgrimage is becoming in some ways a resort destination.

Looking at Gepap's links you can really tell that oil prices are up judging by the number of skyscrappers being built in oil producing countries with low population density. The US and China are the only nonoil exporters who seem to still be in the skyscrapper business and both of those countries are only building skyscrappers in extremely dense urban centers where the economics justify the cost of the buildings.

I'm afraid the oil producing world is having a flash back to the 1970's where a sudden rush of petrol dollars were squandered on economicly dubious white elephant projects by autocratic leaders instead of being used to really diversify the economy or develop their nations.

So does this one, in Kuwait:

The Kuwaiti one has a lot of wasted space. Hollow center plus no windows in the center. It does look interesting but without windows in the center they're wasting valuable realestate; the thing people love about tall buildings is the view but the Kuwaitis have 1/3 to 1/2 of the buildings surface area without windows?

I was completely unaware that skyscraper construction in the US was being halted because of fears of terrorism . Of course, the only major city I've been in recently in the US was Chicago, so... umm... maybe that's why. Lots of new condo buildings comming up.

Oh and the obligatory statement: If we stop building skyscrapers than the terrorists have already won

Only when they have run out of jumbo jets to fly into skyscrapers have the terrorists won

Wouldn't they also win if they run out of skyscrapers to run jumbo jets into?

Dubai isn't an oil-based economy. Their economy is very diverse. Most of the Arab world construction is in Dubai, so that seems to be pretty steady. And the Mecca hotel... well people are gonna keep making the Hajj, so that seems like a good investment too.
