WASHINGTON - The Earth is the hottest it has been in at least 400 years, probably even longer. The
National Academy of Sciences, reaching that conclusion in a broad review of scientific work requested by Congress, reported Thursday that the "recent warmth is unprecedented for at least the last 400 years and potentially the last several millennia."

A panel of top climate scientists told lawmakers that the Earth is running a fever and that "human activities are responsible for much of the recent warming." Their 155-page report said average global surface temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere rose about 1 degree during the 20th century.
Overall, the panel agreed that the warming in the last few decades of the 20th century was unprecedented over the last 1,000 years, though relatively warm conditions persisted around the year 1000, followed by a "Little Ice Age" from about 1500 to 1850.

The scientists said they had less confidence in the evidence of temperatures before 1600. But they considered it reliable enough to conclude there were sharp spikes in carbon dioxide and methane, the two major "greenhouse" gases blamed for trapping heat in the atmosphere, beginning in the 20th century, after remaining fairly level for 12,000 years.

It seems quite clear that there is global warming, and we are causing it.

      Um ...

"the warming in the last few decades of the 20th century was unprecedented over the last 1,000 years, though relatively warm conditions persisted around the year 1000, followed by a "Little Ice Age" from about 1500 to 1850."

So what they're saying, is that in 1000 it was pretty warm, then around 1500 it was cold, and now in 2000 it's warm ...

Clearly those darn dark age civilizations were polluting too much

No really. Ice ages, warming trends...the earth just flying through space minding its own business without people around. Storms on the sun? Space stuff blocking the sun? Eclipses?

I would believe that report. Unfortunately the reality of modern civilization means little or nothing will be done to even try to address this growing problem until it is far too late.

So my advice is to grab a supply of your favourite beverage, sit back and enjoy the end of the world as we know it.

Lots of things affect the temperature of the earth, and they tend to cause major swings back and forth across the eons.

Levels of certain chemicals in the atmosphere (like CO2, perhaps... ) which is controlled (or was, for certain, and is now, according to some non-UR scientists) by many factors, including the plant and animal populations of the earth, various tectonic events; and the warming itself perpetuates itself, up to a point (as quite a lot of gasses, including CO2, are trapped in ice and water, and the more of that which evaporates or melts, the more goes into the atmosphere).

Eventually, tectonics calm down, or else the melting icecaps screw up the warming ocean currents that lead to a significant cool-down, or even potentially a 'little ice age'.

Had we industrialized five hundred years ago, who knows if people would be screaming "ice age... caused by polluting carbon gases that are destroying our ocean currents ...

I'll keep the heating on max, even though its a really hot summer, because its the fact that its summer that is making it hot, and not my central heating. What would I gain from turning off my central heating. Right?

It seems to be absolutely clear what´s causing it.

It´s all the homosexuals demanding and getting more and more rights throughout the world. God is angry about them and therefore heats earth up.
There´s only one way we can cool it down again:
Constantly praying and of course depriving the gays of all rights and trying, with the help of god, to convert them to heterosexuality

No, they would have been perfectly oblivious to the change as the warming caused by human activity would have been counter-balanced by natural cooling trends, then when the natural cooling trends ended, they'd be facing much faster warming.
