  • Couchsurfing - travel made cool

(note: this is not a spam/ad thread, look at disclaimer at the bottom)

I recently discovered this site: www.couchsurfing.com

Basically it's a place where you create an online profile, put some pictures, talk about your interests, and say where you live. The idea is that once you've done that, you gain access to the database of all other people who did the same as you. You can then search it and ask (through the site's private mesenging system) for people to host you - aka 'couchsurfing' when you travel. Of course, you'll be receiving some requests too. The idea is to give roughly as much as you receive (or more).

Since I travel a lot, I find this site to be a boon. You get to meet locals and party with them, and you save a lot on hostel costs. Which means you can keep your money to treat your hosts with a good bottle or anything you feel is appropriate. There are other sites like this, but that one is clearly the best, in terms of functionality and openess of members. According to the FAQ, it's also nonprofit (and registration is free).

Since I've been a member (like two weeks), I've had two Greek hotties, and two English hippies. Tomorrow I'm hosting two Québécois chicks, Saturday an American guy who is bicycling through Europe, Monday another Québécois guy who really sounds like a funny type (well judging from his profile) and later this month another hottie, this time from New York. I've also found people willing to host me in Austria and Ukraine. I thought this might interest some people here... it's really cool, and so far, all my experiences with hosting people have been positive, and those of my friends who are long time members too.
When you host someone or couchsurf at his place, always leave a reference. This way you can let the community know about your experience and make couchsurfing even safer.

If ever you feel like creating a profile, you can add me in your contact list: my login is TABARNAC. And since it's summer time and no school until September, I'm always open about hosting.

So what do you guys think of it? Am I the only one to think the idea is really cool?

note to mods: the site is free and nonprofit... and no, I'm not getting anything out of this... it's really intended as a thread about travelling.

In two weeks people have really taken advantage of you I do hope you receive as much as you are giving.

I have no problem with this thread... it's not your typical spam bot thread, and it's not promoting a for profit site.

      Carry on...

(Unless the owners have a different opinion on this subject )

If you saw the chicks on the site, you'd change your mind. Besides, even if you're hosting a dude, it usually ends up with him paying for the drinks at the bar, which is good because I'm poor and tend to hide beer in my coat, which I can't do in June.

Or The Vanishing. You might wake up in a coffin buried under 6 feet one day.

BTW I signed in and will look for people to throw into my Bologna apartment soon
I will never understand why some people on Apolyton find you so clever. You're predictable, mundane, and a google-whore and the most observant of us all know this. Your battles of "wits" rely on obscurity and whenever you fail to find something sufficiently obscure, like this, you just act like a 5 year old. Congratulations, molly.

About 1 person in 100 million is a serial killer. Couchsurfing.com only has 85,000 members.

Well lets see. I live in the very best part of the Oregon Coast and the diving paradise of Bohol, Philippines.

If I join this I can stay in New Jersey.

Oh and most people have the sense to meet their host or guest in a public place first. So if you claimed to be a chick and actually are a fat drunkard, chances are people will notice there's something wrong.
