And one possible solution to the problem has already been mentioned.
Humans can do what whales can´t do, i.e. use their technical knowledge to build fish farms, probably enough of them to get rid of large scale fishing.
This way the whales can fish what swims in the oceans and humans eat what swims in fish farms.
After all it´s the same with land animals. In the beginning every meat consumed by humans was from hunting, but later ways were developed to domesticate animals as sources for meat and now most of the meat consumed comes from these domesticated animals and only a small percentage comes from hunting.
Of course the fishing companies have to be "persuaded" that it is better to have fishing farms than fishing fleets. I don´t think that they, on their own, will decide to switch to fish farming instead of fishing, as long as even a small margin of profit can be made by their fishing fleets (and if the point is reached where they don´t make enough profit anymore, the stocks are probably so depleted that they need decades to recover (or don´t recover at all).
Son it might be best if the nations who do a lot of fishing sponsored researching and building large scale fish farms, or that they made it profitable for their fishing companies, to sponsor such research on their own.Tamsin (Lost Girl): "I am the Harbinger of Death.
