This looks like what I tried some time ago, which fragmented large/new files
This space is empty... or is it?

      1. Now.
      2. Before installing any new software.
      3. After uninstalling any software.
      4. Once a month if nothing else (though if you aren't adding/deleting any software, the disk should be fine).
You're kidding, right? That seems a bit... over the top.

I defrag my hard drive once every 5 to 6 months. And, often, Windows tells me my hd doesn't need to be defragmented.

That's just some of the official recommendation stuff that I've seen around (maybe just on hardcore gaming sites). Like I said later, I only defrag when I'm about to install a new game. Otherwise I tend to forget the whole thing.

It seems I've almost filled up my 120 Gig C: drive and I just spied a Fry's advertisement where they were offering 300 Gig external drives for $86 after rebate. I may have to pick one of these up other wise I might be forced to delete some of the movies I've gotten off of emule.

              4 years?

              unbelievable.

usually I reformat my hard drive before I get that long. I just reformatted my hard drive around October of last year. I haven't degragged since then though.

Is degrag really necessary when you still have 50% of your hard drive unused?

I figure I bought my computer in December 2002 so it is ancient by computer standards yet I've only defragged perhaphes a dozen times during that period.

With faster drives and all the added space we now have, it's not the issue it used to be. But defrags should be putting files in a better loading sequence, which should help speed things up regardless of your unused space. Of course, it tends to be the hardcore gamers clocking frame rates, etc., that really notice.
