    3 gorges isn't finished yet.

I still think our dam looks cooler.

It's not the size of the dam, but how you use it.

I've heard that a very large percentage of the mercury found in Pacific Ocean tuna fish comes from China. The mercury is released via the burning of high mercury coal found in northern China and works its way up the ocean's food chain into alpha preditors like sharks and tuna fish.

That's no matter. The Chinese are the ones who built the wonder, while you just went for no-name dams.

BTW I only know about the mercury in Tuna fish because the local paper ran an article on a UCSD marine biology professor who study the changes in mercury levels of tuna fish over the last 20 years. Supposedly Mercury levels have tripled in that time and are highest in the species of tuna which go further out to sea to feed. The conclusion was that it was pollution from China that was contaminating much of the western Pacific and that the top preditors were building up higher and higher levels of mercury due to it.

I guess that will make them easier to catch when global temperatures rise.

how safe is tuna to eat? I love it. It's like the only fish I eat.

I heard that you should eat light tuna. But what's the difference between light tuna and regular tuna? I guess they just aren't as fat.

It'll take a long time for the Chinese to make up for 70 years of shields produced by those no-name dams while they were building Three Gorges.

I think China has been doing quite a bit to curb air pollution, like building some of the biggest wind farms and the like. They have also been putting money in fusion research (they are part of the international team that's building a bing honkey fusion reactor in France).

Because of record energy prices, every coal mine owner is pushing excavations to the limit, safety be damned....

Can you cite some good examples? I've heard of some of what's been done but none of it could be classified as quite a bit. In most cases, the efforts far fall short of their goals. Just look at coal power where pollution actually got worse in the face of "reform."

Even wind power suffers from the primary problem that it is more expensive than coal. This means increased energy costs for the public, which the government is loath to accept. Fortunately many foreign companies have been investing in wind power in China. However, they're being hindered by protectionist measures for China's energy industry.

sailed to nearby Seoul, sweeping along dust and desert sand before wafting across the Pacific.
Bleck that was nasty, was like a ****ing dust storm right in the middle of the city.

I suppose that's why the clouds of Chinese pollution that blow into Seoul get worse each year...

Hangzhou often suffered from days of yellow haze. They have a coal plant built right next to their educational district. Can't be good for the children. Whatever China is doing, it is far from enough.

As for my other question about coal, do anyone know how environmentally friendly it can be with the right technology? I remember seeing something on CNN where this guy invented a bio-filter for CO2 emissions for power plants. Basically, it would just cycle streams of algae through the exhaust.
