  • Need help identifying an obscure 1980s Star Wars audiobook

I'm looking for the name of a Star Wars book. It is non canonical, and it was published in the early 1980s for kids, possibly as part of Scholastic books (although their website has no record of it).

It was short - about 16 pages, with full-page color illustrations, and it featured only Artoo and Threepio from the movies. It came along with a cassette tape, and each time you were supposed to turn the page, Artoo would give his characteristic beep.

(For those of you very familiar with the film, I believe the sound effect came from Star Wars IV and I think I remember it being from the scene in the Death Star when Artoo is hacking into the computer... after the TK421 incident.)

The plot was fairly simple: Artoo and Threepio fetch up on a robotic planet where a cyborg leader (with a recognizably human face) is creating a nation of droids. During their stay, the leader's second-in-command plots to lead a rebellion against him. Artoo overhears the 2-i-c and the battle begins prematurely.

At the end of the battle, the planet lies in ruins and the original leader surveys the wreckage. He laments the waste and destruction, and tells Artoo and Threepio that they are free to go.

I was given this book when I was very young and I listened to it quite often, though it wasn't one of my favorites because it only featured two recognizable characters from the movies. I realized I'd forgotten the name. If anybody knows, please post it here.

(I remember three years ago I was likewise trying to remember "The Sword of the Spirits" by John Christopher, and Off-Topic provided the answer, sure as ever.)

    Thanks!

I've never heard of it but I've had reasonably good luck finding obscure stuff on Amazon.com

Then you had better luck than me. The closest I ever got was a 2900-item-long list of titles of Star Wars books, sorted by date, from most recent to least recent.

This book is obviously going to be waaaaaay down in the list on Amazon because it came out in the 1980s. But the Amazon list has no way of jumping to pages further down - you have to click on the "see more items" button x number of times. (I think it displayed 20 items per page. And I don't have the patience to click it and wait for the pages to load, 145 times.)

I actually had a copy of that too, but I have no idea what the title was.

Oh. Well you're screwed then. Beyond belief.

I'd look on half.com or some used book site.

This is the website of the Utrecht University ICS department.

That's a listing of several Star Wars items, including a bunch of kid's books.

The one I think is most likely yours, though, is:
              [q="msu library"]
              Droid World.
Star Wars : Droid World : the Further Adventures / based on
characters created by George Lucas ; adapted from a Marvel
Comics story by Archie Goodwin ; illustrated by Dick Foes.
              -- Universal City, CA : Lucasfilm Ltd., 1983. -- 22 p. :
              col. ill. ; 19 cm. -- (Read-Along Adventure Series ; 153
DC) -- "24 page read-along book and tape." -- Intended for
use with cassette tape, lacking in MSU copy. -- Call no.:
              PN6728.S75G63 1983[/q]

This is probably the same thing, but with a record instead of cassette:

This is a pretty thorough listing of SW produced materials, though it isn't good at giving links to things, you'd have to recognize the name:

If it's not droid world, it sounds like it's something Buena Vista...

              Ahh, here's an actual copy:

              24.95 USD!!! Wow!!

              Hope that helps!

Thanks, snoopy - that's the one!

Once again the collective wisdom of Off Topic proves that there's nothing that the Apolyton Hive Mind cannot answer!

                Thanks!
