I guess I just mean that if Nationwide is willing to give $50 million to a good cause and they want some recognition for it that doesn't seem unreasonable. But, perhaps more than any other field, ethics are vital in medicine. And not just ethics in practice, but ethics in perception. And to name your hospital after an insurance company certainly gives--at the very least--the appearance of a conflict of interest. And I think that alone would cause me to say, "Thank you for the donation, but we can not name the hospital Nationwide Children's."
In fact, there are rumors--and nothing more than rumors as far as I know--that what actually happened was that the trustees asked Nationwide if they wanted to change the name, and Nationwide initially said no. No child is turned away from Children's. It is already one of the best funded hospitals in the country. This donation was towards building a new hospital; nevertheless, the old one will be renamed as well.Originally posted by Deity Dude

OK whatever the specifics, I am just saying that assuming there would be $50 million dollars less for children's health so an ethical statement can be made doesn't seem like a good tradeoff.Originally posted by Guynemer

What I really wish is that the tax code wouldn't treat this kind of thing as a charitable donation, which I think it does (uless the money was part of a sale of naming rights, as is often the case with new sports stadia). The Nationwide thing doesn't bother me so much, because it actually sounds fairly generic -- though I take Guynemer's point. The Abercrombie & Fitch thing, though, is beyond the pale. The fact that nobody at the corporation seems to have had the decency to say "this is too much; it's actually offensive" is...well...unsurprising, I suppose. I guess I am so used to it nowadays it doesn't even bother me. In the Detroit area just about everything is named after Ford (Ford Hospital, Ford Field, Henry Ford Community College, Ford Freeway (I-94), Ford Rd., Ford Foundation etc etc). If I go to Ford Hospital, it doesn't even cross my mind that is named after the founder of Ford Motor nor do I think there is some ethical issue.
I'd prefer Tiger Stadium to Comerica Park, but if Comerica Park with General Motors Fountain means we can pay for a few free agents - I don't really care.
I think in alot of these instances the donor looks worse than the recipient.
Although Enron's stadium was an embarassment for awhile until they changed the name.Comment
