Abu Musab al-Zarqawi killed in air raid
      AP - 45 minutes ago

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the al-Qaida leader in Iraq who waged a bloody campaign of suicide bombings and beheadings of hostages, has been killed in a precision airstrike, U.S. and Iraqi officials said Thursday. It was a long-sought victory in the war in Iraq.

naw if it worked that way the bush administration would have "found" wmd in Iraq a couple years back. Bush is grossly incompetant and grossly partisan and a liar but I think he really believes his own wot rhetoric.

Stop poking holes in my indestructible logic. Obviously... uh... Bush will find WMD in 2008 and use that as leverage to... uh... cancel presidential elections and declare himself the Emperor.

I think he waits until his approval ratings are even lower, and then pulls the WMDs out he knew about since 2003. He just kept the findings secret for the surprise effect. It's the same as with OBL, who was in US prison for years before he was presented to the public shortly before the last elections to make Bush win. Or so.....

Well, hopefully this is true. I expect, however, that even if it is true, it's kinda like lopping one head off a hydra.

Re fingerprints, I read a bit around, if someone cares, he was indeed in prison in Jordan in the 90ies, got 15 years because he was involved in terrorism against Israel from Jordan territory, but was released in 99 due to an amnesty of the new Jordan king. If they only knew back then.....

Yeah - he had a prior prison sentence before the last trial in absentia in which he was sentenced to death.

Good riddance, but there are a lot of non "al Qaeda in Iraq" insurgency problems, and the most important ones are domestic.

But really, if they MOABed a city block full of civilians to get him, I'd say it's a pyrhic victory, politically.
If you can locate him within a city block, you can locate him much more precisely and use smaller ordnance. I haven't seen anything on civilian casualties, just six KIA in the safehouse, and they snatched al Zarqawi himself to make positive ID.

A Jordanian official told the Associated Press that Jordanian agents had contributed to the operation against Zarqawi.
In the ned it all comes down to human intel which we're still not getting enough of. We had to rely on the Jordians to infiltrate his group and tell us where to find him.

Exactly. While this is a propaganda victory for the Bush gang, it remains to be seen if there will be a significant impact on the insurgency. I suspect not, since the role of al Qaeda in the insurgency has been overemphasized.
