It's still correct, though somewhat ambiguous, to call the diplomat an "EU diplomat."

Yup. About as much as calling a Mexican diplomat a "NAFTA diplomat"

That was the comparison I first thought of

The EU is a bit more substantial than NAFTA.

People don't regularly refer to the combined territory of Canada, the US, and Mexico as NAFTA.

Yes for all things economic, and for most things political.

              But for diplomacy, no.

People don't regularly refer to the combined territory of Canada, the US, and Mexico as NAFTA.

Americans regularly refer to the combined territory of 25 countries (and probably more than that) as the EU, because keeping track of 25 foreign countries is too complicated.

It seems the gross generalization was correct or at least had some grain of truth if you get all defensive over something as inconsequential as failing to say EU member country diplomats.

there is no ground here for such a conclusion.

I'm not looking for any such thing. I was pointing out that Spiffor's remarks were pedantic and wrong, because there was never the implication that the ambassador represented the EU.

I reacted to your and Kuci's post, because I'm starting to develop a pet peeve, that is the use of "EU" in the mouth of many American posters, who basically consider Europe as a bloc.

I can't care less about how sensitive or rough our diplomats can be.

Well, it's easier to say "EU" than "EU sans UK."

Isn't that what you aspire to be considered as?
