Envoy quits over 'gay, race slurs'
Ambassador asks for transfer after partner abused in street

    Wednesday, June 7, 2006 Posted: 1052 GMT (1852 HKT)

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (Reuters) -- The Dutch ambassador to Estonia is leaving his post after his partner suffered racist and homophobic abuse, the foreign ministry said on Wednesday.

Ambassador Hans Glaubitz is moving to the Dutch consulate in Montreal after requesting an early transfer because his partner, a black Cuban, could not stand living in Tallinn any longer.

"It is not very nice to be regularly abused by drunken skinheads as a '******' and to be continuously gawped at as if you have just stepped out of a UFO," Dutch media quoted Glaubitz as saying.

A ministry spokeswoman confirmed the move: "The authorities always treated them well but there was racist and homophobic abuse on the street."

She said Foreign Minister Bernard Bot had called his Estonian counterpart on Tuesday to discuss the issue.

Ehtel Halliste, a spokesman for the Estonian foreign ministry, noted that Glaubitz had said he and his partner had been well received at an official level.

"However, if there have been incidents in public places, we express regret," he said.

The European Parliament last month demanded an emergency debate on a wave of racist and homophobic attacks in Europe which they said radical political groups were fueling.

Rights groups have expressed particular concern about rising racism and xenophobia in eastern Europe.

Rainer Kattel, professor of political science from Tallinn University, said: "Estonia does have latent racism, but it is not violent like in other countries. If you are openly gay and of a different race people will make mean comments to you. We have not really gone through the enlightenment revolution."

The Netherlands became the first country to allow same-sex couples to marry in 2000.

Don't these f****** people know its the 21st century already? I almost wish the USSR didn't collapse. And to know we let those w****** join the EU

I don't think you need to self-censor "****ers". Besides, intolerance of the "other" is a deeply ingrained human trait, unlikely to diminish anytime soon (certainly not in our lifetimes.) The best we can hope for is that people learn to be civil enough to keep their disgust to themselves, even though that runs counter to people's right to self-expression.

    Still, f*ck Estonia.

Edit: Son of a gun, I guess you *do* need to self-censor "****ers".

Would this guy be able to avoid serving in some place like Saudi Arabia, if he were assigned there?

Yes, screw Estonia because it's Estonia's fault and everyone who is Estonian.

Or better yet, screw drunken skinheads, across the borders, world wide.

Estonia fits in EU extremely well. I'm glad they're in.

But if people want to go on PC rampage 'omg skinheads abusing gays and race peepl' then fine, but that's kind of blind sighted.

I don't give an effing **** about if he would function in Saudi-Arabia or if there are skins all over the world. He is our official representative over there and I don't like how the Estonians (and our Foreign Office BTW) play it down.

If they can't handle it they should have said so when he was send there.

It wasn't the authorities, it was simply street-rabble... They probably don't know which ambassadors are appointed from all the countries over the world with an embassy in Tallinn

I do care. Did the Foreign Office play down the challenges in working there and thereby set your diplomat up to fail?

A diplomat has to be able to live in Rome and do as the Romans do, after all. That's his job.

It's a good question. I suspect the Dutch Foreign Office simply didn't know. The Netherlands is a small country and Estionia's a small country, so the Dutch mission to Estonia is probably tiny. What's the likelihood that the Dutch mission had prior knowledge of how a gay black man would be treated on the streets of Tallin? Little-to-none, I'd imagine.

In this sense the analogy to Saudi Arabia doesn't really apply, because the Saudi's disdain for homosexuality is enshrined in law.
