  • wheel mouse question

The left click button on my wheel mouse started to get a little "click deaf" last week and I kept forgetting to buy a replacement mouse. Finally I got so annoyed with the thing that I opened it up and fixed it by filling in a dent in the little plastic "hammer" on the underside of the button that actually did the job of depressing the little clicky switch inside the mouse.

Now it clicks great but when I was putting the mouse top back on a tiny little spring and bent wire thing came off of the mouse wheel and I could not see how in the hell it was placed on the thing to save my life. The mouse wheel itself must be optical because it still works great, but it's missing a sort of ratcheting effect that it used to have when I would roll it.

I do sorta miss the ratcheting effect but does anyone know if it actually had any functional value? Will the mouse wheel be able to crash software now or something? I realise this seems like a stupid question but it's hard to imagine corner cutting manufacturers having totally superfluous extra pieces in their mice. Surely it's not just for an interesting tactile effect?

I'm not sure I could ever puzzle out how to make the mouse wheel roll with the same feel it had before but I guess I can live with that if it didn't serve any functional purpose.

It may have something to do with using the mouse wheel as a button. Were it me, I'd use it until it caused a problem.
I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).

that's what I say, but of course I still haven't bought a new mouse.

        I'm lazy and hate shopping.

My middle scroll wheel doesn't work . Very annoying when trying to troll here at Poly or play civ4.

Did the same thing awhile ago, and as you, no dice. It's the little spring that makes the noise. I gave and now I actully prefer it without the noise.

My mouse has crashed my computer. Often it will just stop working for no reason. Now, I did buy it in a seedy market in China and have dropped it a few times. It works most of the time, but has off days.

it still clicks as a middle button, its just that before when i rolled the wheel it would softly click a 'notch' each time it was rolled in either direction. Now it rolls like its totally unattached to anything inside but the roll and scroll function seems to be working exactly as before. it seems so strange.

I hate to throw things away unless they are good and broke. Now it *seems* to be fixed apart from the unfamilier feel to the mouse wheel when I'm rolling the mouse wheel. As a result it's very now hard to convince myself to bring home another mouse just to remedy that small (innocuous?) change.

did your button fix work long term as well then? I guess if the smooth rolling mouse wheel didn't give you any problems and your button fix stayed fixed I'll probably just follow your lead and ignore the change.

My button was working ok before, it's just that some dust had gathered, making my wheel to behave irratically (yes, yes, laser mouse).

heh, anyone else think of this kind of mouse wheel?

amazingly typing in "mouse wheel" in a google image search comes back with porn. What is wrong with our society?

NO! This spring stops your mouse from hacking into your computer. It will be downloading loads of rodent porn when you aren't there you fool!

I was sure you were exagerating and that there would be a picture on page 5 or something but it's page after page of porn. However the chinese characters in a lot of the captions leads me to think it's not something wrong with "our" society
